St. Joseph’s Table Friday – March 19th at 7:30am
“Having a St. Joseph’s table is a Sicilian tradition, a traditional show of hospitality whereby a table is set in a way similar to a shrine, with flowers, candles, and a statue of St. Joseph. Bread, pastries, and other breakfast foods placed on it are blessed, and a large portion of it is given to the poor. It is a celebration that combines feasting and food for the poor.”
—2010 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons and Weekdays: The Almanac for Pastoral Liturgy, Liturgy Training Publications.
The Liturgy Committee invites all parishioners to participate in this festivity by bringing bread, pastries and other breakfast foods to share with the hungry. Bring your donations to the kitchen before the 7am Mass on Friday, March 19th. May God bless you for your generosity.
St. Polycarp – February 23rd
“Eighty-six years I have served Christ, and He never did me any wrong. How can I blaspheme my King and Savior?” Boldly answering the official who demanded he worship pagan gods, Polycarp, today’s “Senior Citizen Saint,” demonstrates that courage, far from being the preserve of the young, is a virtue cultivated through life-long fidelity and crowned by final perseverance. A disciple of St. John, who is said to have consecrated him Bishop of Smyrna in modern-day Turkey, Polycarp witnesses to the truth that, whatever time and space may separate us, Jesus’ gift of the Eucharist unites us.
Polycarp’s final words, preserved by the Church of Smyrna, sound like a Eucharistic Prayer in which the saint offers himself: “Lord, almighty God, Father of Your beloved and blessed Son Jesus Christ, through whom we have come to the knowledge of Yourself…may I be received among the martyrs as a rich and pleasing sacrifice…through the eternal priest of heaven, Jesus Christ…through Him be glory to You, together with Him and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.” —Peter Scagnelli, © Copyright, J.S. Paluch Co.
Homily Points
- The lure of temptations is that they always pull us toward something desirable; but temptations also pull us away from something even better. For example, an inordinate desire for “power and glory” hurts our relationships with family and friends. In the Gospel Jesus is tempted three times but always resists because He chooses what is better: fidelity to His identity and mission.
- All three of the temptations the devil set before Jesus were directed toward Jesus’ very identity as the Son of God. If He had given in to the devil and, ultimately, worshiped him, Jesus would have betrayed who He was and what He had been sent to do.
- When we resist temptations, we are really acting in consonance with who we are as baptized followers of Jesus. Our very identity is tied into our choice to remain faithful to God. Being true to ourselves means opening ourselves to being “led by the Spirit” more deeply into our Christian identity. This is truly the work of our Lenten journey.
