In the past several years, we have frequently heard the term “common good” used. How does that term apply to us as Catholics? The Common Good and Community is one of the most important themes of Catholic Social Teaching. Only the Dignity of the Human Person is of greater importance. The human person is both sacred and social. We recognize our dignity and rights only in relationship with others, in community. As human beings, we grow and achieve fulfillment in community with others. The Dignity of the Human Person can only be realized and protected in the context of the wider community.
Freely, we talk about our obligation to “love our neighbor” as an individual dimension, but loving our neighbor also has a social dimension. All of us have a responsibility to contribute to the common good. As a basic measure of the common good, every individual has a right to food, shelter, education, and healthcare. As a society, we have an obligation to see that these elements are available to all.
