KAILUA-KONA—In 1840, two French priests arrived here from O‘ahu to bring Catholicism to the Big Island of Hawai‘i. The optimistic and hard-working clergymen overcame a score of challenges to pave the way for the founding of St. Michael the Archangel mission. A stone hitching post inside today’s Kona Plaza Shopping Arcade marks the location of the island’s first Catholic mass.

The daunting tasks and accomplishments of Kona’s priests, and their congregations, are chronicled over the last 170 years in a new book, “North Kona’s Catholic Heritage…remembered.” The 52-page color book debuts in conjunction with the St. Michael the Archangel Feast Day celebration Sunday, Sept. 27.

Open to the public, the gathering begins after the 11 a.m. Feast Day Mass at St. Michael’s. The celebration is headquartered across the street at Hale Halewai and fun will sprawl onto the church grounds, including pony rides.

“In addition to the debut of this wonderful book, Feast Day festivities include a picnic, games, entertainment and silent auction—it is celebration of our community,” says Pastor Lio Faletoi.

Filled with photos, historical info and a handy timeline, the book traces the history of St. Michael’s Parish, which includes St. Michael the Archangel Church, Immaculate Conception Church in Holualoa, St. Peter’s Church in Kahalu‘u, St. Paul’s Church in Honalo and Holy Rosary Church in Kalaoa.

The publication also looks to the future as plans are in the works to demolish St. Michael’s Church on Ali‘i Drive and build a new facility. Built in 1850, St. Michael’s was damaged beyond repair in the October 2006 earthquake.

The parish’s Heritage Committee produced “North Kona’s Catholic Heritage...remembered,” which was printed on recycled paper in Hawai‘i. It sells for $20 with tax and proceeds benefit the church’s Building Fund. Book sales kick off during Feast Day weekend, starting with the 5 p.m. Mass on Saturday, Sept. 26 and continuing Sunday at morning Masses and the Feast Day celebration.

“To showcase the book’s premiere, the Heritage Committee will screen videos of interviews done to research the parish’s history,” details Pastor Faletoi. “There will also be a slide show of historic photographs collected from parishioners.” The visual presentation will be at Hale Halawai.

In addition to copies being sold at St. Michael’s Church, books are available via mail by sending a check or money order for $22.50 to North Kona Catholic Community, 75-5769 Ali‘i Drive, Kailua-Kona, HI  96740. ST. MICHAEL’S CHURCH

Transcript by Allie Bennett-Moran

From the arrival of Missionary priests of the Sacred Hearts Congregation in 1840, the North Kona Catholic Community has been one created by love, patience, perseverance and much hard work.  Frs. Robert A. Walsh and Louis Ernest Heurtel began what was to be a thriving parish consisting of St. Michael the Archangel in Kailua-Kona, Immaculate Conception in Holualoa, St. Paul’s in Honalo, St. Peter’s By the Sea in Kahalu’u, and Holy Rosary in Kalaoa.

Mass was first held on Hawaii Island on July 5, 1840, at a spot located inside the present Kona Shopping Arcade.  A stone hitching post there serves as a reminder to this precise location.  The present St. Michael’s grounds were donated to the Church by Gov. Kuakini who, while never converting to the faith, was consistently a generous benefactor to the early priests and the Catholic Church.  By 1842 a new church building had been completed on this donated land along with a school begun by Fr. Heurtel.  Mr. Thomas Aiu, whose family also donated to the Church a small plot of ground near Alii Drive, was the first lay teacher in 1890.  Originally, meetings and services were held in a small grass hut located where the cemetery now lies.

When Fr. Joachim Marechal assumed the duties of the Catholic presence in May 1848, he also took on the task of planning and building a more permanent house of worship.  This new building is the large and much loved stone structure that has served well the families of North Kona for so many years. A traditional design built of lava rock and coral sand mortar with a packed dirt floor, it has endured many changes, renovations, damages and repairs since those days.  Shortly after the church was completed, a small 3-room Rectory was constructed to house the priests.  France sent a treasured gift of a large bell in 1853.

Fr. Marechal passed away in 1859 and was reverently interred beneath his beloved St. Michael’s Church.
