It has been a known fact for some months that we have to move the Food Pantry away from St. Michael’s property on Alii Drive. After much reflection, discussion, and prayer, we decided to talk to other Christian congregations in the area to see whether we might join with one or more of them to provide food to those who need it. Mokuaikaua Church responded enthusiastically. They have an equally large number of persons come to them for food. Therefore, the distribution point for the Food Pantry will be located at Mokuaikaua Church beginning on Friday, Oct. 14th.
On Wednesday, the 12th, the container will be moved to the Friendly Place where nonperishable food will be stored and bagged. Al Biro will continue to coordinate our activity and collaborate with the coordinator from Mokuaikaua Pantry. We will provide volunteers, food and financial assistance for the purchase of food as always. The Lutheran Church will also continue to support the Pantry as they have for years.
Food Pantry will now be held two days a week and people will have to travel to one point only. What we are about to do is actually a noble thing. We are letting go just a little to achieve a greater good. Hopefully, a step like this will bring Christians of various denominations closer in service to the poor.
This week, I am happy to announce those volunteers from St. Michael’s who have been chosen to be this year’s Island Treasures for the West Hawaii Vicariate. On Friday, October 14th, Bishop Larry will come to the Big Island as we gather at Sacred Heart, Hawi to honor those from each parish who have volunteered time, talent and treasure to their parishes. This year, we allowed for each parish to name more individuals. Our Treasures are the following: Al Biro, Carmel and Vincent Cilia, Ben Cuaresma, Jack and Zola Ingram, Dick Leander, Robert and Lorraine Loando, Ric Silva and James and Joretta Young. Congratulations and my sincere thanks for all you do.
There will be dinner and presentation of the awards starting at 6PM at Sacred Heart, Hawi. Each parish is permitted to have 50 people attend. First preference will be given to the Island Treasures and their guests. However, anyone else who is interested in attending, please call the office and give your name. We will accommodate as many people as possible.
Peace in Christ,
