This year, we are using a new approach to Religious Education at our parish. Religious Education is still struggling against an outdated model across the United States. It has caused more problems than it has solved. Embracing the vision of faith formation that encompasses the paradigm of "whole Church" faith formation requires a number of significant changes.

I have committed my time to personal involvement in making this happen and I am looking forward to our first event on Oct. 25th at 12noon.

We are moving away from a focus on children-only by implementing lifelong formation for all ages and generations, including and especially adults. We will move beyond the focus of the textbook and encourage learning through works of justice and service.

One `Ohana equips the parish to become a community of learning that is centered in the events of Church life. One `Ohana is built upon the solid foundations of the Church's teachings in a distinctive approach to faith formation. The threefold aim includes nurturing the people's minds and hearts in the wisdom of the Catholic Faith so that who they are and how they live is deeply influenced by what they know, nurturing people's identity and lifestyle in Christian discipleship, and empowering people to live their faith so that the world is transformed by the Christian vision.

I look forward to seeing you there. Come and eat with us; pray with our `ohana; learn with our community. Then, go out to serve God in one another and the poorest of the poor.

Thanks to all who have supported the Youth Ministry. The group is getting off to a very promising start for the year. As time goes by, I hope more of the Youth will be able to participate. This is an investment in the future of our Church. John Paul is busy developing plans to make the experience one that teens can enjoy.

We hope to see many of you today to celebrate the arrival of the relic of St. Damien. What a wonderful occasion for our island.  —Fr. Lio
