Today, we will listen to the first of three powerful Gospels written by St. John. Today and the next two Sundays are called the Scrutiny Sundays. Listen to John’s masterful style of writing. There are no miracles. John uses signs that point beyond the story that is being related. John is looking for your response to the story. Each story relates an encounter with Christ in a unique way.
These three Gospel stories provide choices for the Catechumens who are preparing for Baptism at the Easter Vigil and for the rest of the faithful community. This Sunday, our Gospel reading is about the Samaritan woman at the well. For her, the choice is between water that quenches thirst and water that does not. Jesus identifies Himself as the source of living water. Making this choice requires profound faith. Let us pray for our Catechumens and ourselves that we, also, have the faith to respond correctly.
On Thursday of this week, the annual Chrism Mass will be held in Hilo. Bishop Silva will bless the Holy Oils, and each parish will receive them. The oils are Oil of the Infirm, Oil of Catechumens, and the Sacred Chrism. The oils are used in the administration of Baptism, Confirmation, and Sacrament of the Sick. The Sacred Chrism is also used when a priest receives the Sacrament of Holy Orders.
Peace in Christ,
Fr. Lio
