The Gospels tell us that many times while Jesus was carrying out His mission on earth, He referred to the Spirit. As He began His public life, He read from the scrolls, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because He has chosen me to bring good news to the poor.” At the end of His time on earth, Jesus told His disciples that He would not leave them alone but He would send His Spirit as an Advocate to be with them and to support them as they began their ministry of spreading the Good News. In John’s Gospel, Jesus says to His apostles “Receive the Holy Spirit.”

The second chapter of the Acts of the Apostles describes the Feast of Pentecost when all the disciples were gathered together and they were “filled with the Holy Spirit.” On that day we can say, “The Church was born.” Spreading this Good News, which Jesus entrusted to the small band of disciples called for so much sacrifice.

The Church became a living community where the members pooled their meager financial resources, committed their time, and used their individual talents. From the dedication of this small number of people and the power of the Holy Spirit, evolved what we know today as the Christian Community.

The Spirit lives in the Church, which, in our daily lives, is the North Kona Catholic Community. Every member is called to give time, talent, and treasure to further the mission of Christ. Your gifts enrich the Church. I am grateful for the many, many parishioners who offer their gifts in ministry. For those with huge work and family obligations, it may mean volunteering one half hour of their time a month to some ministry in the parish. There is a place for everyone. Whatever you are able to offer is pleasing to the Lord.

Congratulations to (top row, left to right) Cassin Muramoto, Teresa Loera, Ethen Bilotti, (middle row) Adam Spittler, Samantha Soto, (front row) Genevieve Krier, Donna Bearth, and Kaipo Leopoldino (not pictured), all of who are graduating from high school this month. The 9AM Mass at St. Michael’s last week was celebrated for these young people as they go forth either to further their education or take their places in the work world. We send them with our blessings and a promise of our prayers. Please take time to look at their pictures at the rear of the tent and congratulate them for their achievements when you see them.

Thank you to everyone who came to help clean the cemeteries yesterday. The corporal work of mercy that reminds us of our Christian duty to Bury the Dead includes our responsibility to maintain the area in which we place our deceased brothers and sisters. This is an important ministry in the Church. A special thank you to Pocho for organizing the work at St. Michael’s. Thank you to those who came to Holualoa. Thank you to Fr. John and the Hispanic Community for their hard work at St. Paul’s.

On Memorial Day, May 31st, I will celebrate the 7AM Mass in St. Michael’s Cemetery. Please join us.

Our next joyous parish celebration will be First Communion which will take place on Sunday, June 6th. Please remember to pray for these children and their families as they complete their preparation for the reception of the Eucharistic Lord.  May the Spirit guide the comings and goings in your lives.   - Fr. Lio
