Today we are celebrating the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. This great Feast commemorates the time when Jesus left this world and ascended to the Father. The Gospel writers differ about the time when the Ascension of the Lord actually occurred. We, in the Church, celebrate it 40 days after Easter. Like the first disciples, we anticipate the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost.
Please remember our ministry to our dead on Saturday, May 22nd, when we will clean the cemeteries. As I said last week, please come. Bring your gloves, hats and tools. At 8am, please go to either St. Michael’s where Pocho will organize the work; Holualoa where Fr. Lio will be directing the work; or St. Paul’s where Fr. John will be. The parish will provide food and drink.
If you have relatives buried in any of our cemeteries, it is very appropriate for you to bring flowers to place on the grave. We also need to think of those who have no relatives to remember them.
Please remember One ‘Ohana on Sunday, May 23rd at St. Michael’s. Organization heads and Chairpersons of Parish Ministries, please send reminders to your members. The theme will be peace. I hope to see the same level of attendance as last month. We will begin with lunch on the lawn.
This will be the last One ‘Ohana until the St. Michael’s Feast Day. Next year, there will be a One ‘Ohana every month. On the 23rd of May, each family will receive a calendar of dates for next year so that you can reserve the dates way ahead of time.
As each of us prepares for the Feast of Pentecost, we identify and give thanks for the gifts we have received. What are your gifts and how do you plan to use them to help build the Kingdom?
God bless our families. —Fr. Lio
