This weekend, our Elect are celebrating the Second Scrutiny. At the 9am Mass, they will receive the Creed which they will recite aloud for the first time at the Easter Vigil. The time is drawing near for them. Please remember them in your prayers. Most of us cannot remember our Baptisms because we were infants. Think about how exciting it is for one who freely chooses the Christian way of life and participates fully in preparing for the reception of the Sacraments of Initiation. These Elect approach this point in their lives with great anticipation and excitement.
On March 23rd, Catholics from all over the Big Island will gather at Sacred Heart-Hawi to celebrate the Chrism Mass with Bishop Larry. This is the Mass at which each parish receives the sacred oils that are used in the administration of the Sacraments for the coming year. The Mass will be at 7pm with dinner to follow. The oils are the Oil of Catechumens, the Oil of the Sick, and the Sacred Chrism. I encourage anyone in the parish who would like to join us there. It is a very moving, spiritual experience.
Our pre-Easter Reconciliation Service will be held on Tuesday, March 23rd at 6pm at St. Michael’s. At that time the children who are to receive their First Holy Communion in June of this year will celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation with their parents and the rest of our ‘ohana. Please pray for these children as they take this big step in the formation of their Faith.
This weekend, the Diocese is sponsoring a Retreat on Oahu for young men who may be considering a vocation to the priesthood. At the present time, the Diocese has seven men studying in various colleges and seminaries with the intention of becoming priests for the Diocese of Honolulu.
The renovation of St. Paul’s continues as scheduled. I expect that the major work will be finished by the end of March.
The Core Committee for One Catholic ‘Ohana meets every Monday. We are planning the next One ‘Ohana gathering, which will be held on Sunday, April 11th immediately after the 11am Mass. As always, we will serve lunch and have prayer, age-related activities, and reflection. The theme of this event will be the care of God’s creation. You will hear more about this each week, but please mark your calendars. — Fr. Lio
