Catholic Social Teaching - Dec. 4, 2011

We live in a country which stands for the separation of Church and state.  Yet we know how much our Catholic values can potentially impact the way we engage in political life.  The United States Catholic Bishops encourage us to practice faithful citizenship, to be good members of our democracy, and to be true to our discipleship at the same time.

One of the themes of Catholic Social Teaching is the Call to Family, Community, and Participation.  We recognize the fact that the person is not only sacred but social.  How we organize our society -- in economics and politics, in law and policy -- directly affects human dignity and the capacity of individuals to grow in community.  Marriage and the family are the central social institutions that must be supported and strengthened, not undermined.  We believe people have a right and a duty to participate in society, seeking together the common good and well-being of all, especially the poor and vulnerable.
