School began again this past week. Vacation days are over for now. This week will take our last trip through the magic of reading. Mornings in Jenin takes us to a very troubled spot in the world. We are going to Palestine this week. We’ve read about the Palestinian/Israeli wars, but what would this violence and suffering look like through the eyes of a young Palestinian girl and her family? This book opens a window through which you can view this.
It is a beautifully written novel that describes the human dimension of the struggle for a Palestinian homeland that many of us see only as political and/or religious conflict laced with terrorism. It gives those people who are sometimes dubbed “the other side” a human face. Amal tells us the story of four generations of her family who lived through both the birth of Israel and the wars that occurred in the process. Hers were a people who lost their homes and all earthly possessions. They were forced to live in refugee camps. She tells of a people who are still prevented from settling, owning, moving, working, and buying goods and services at will.
