Strength in What Remains by Tracy Kidder is a captivating story about a man from Burundi in Africa who flees from a violent war to the shores of the U.S. looking for a better life.  His new home turned out to be not all what he had envisioned.  Deo landed in New York with $200 in his pocket.  Hungry and homeless, he struggled to stay alive.  It is a moving story about the generosity of the people who helped him rebuild his life and finish medical school.

Learn also about the genocide that took place in the wars in Burundi and Rwanda.

The connections to Catholic Social Teaching were the following:

  • Sanctity of human life
  • Racial difference leading to war
  • Inequality in the human community
