Take some beach time to read this week’s book. Once you start it, you won’t want to put it down. This is a novel called The Help by Kathryn Sockett. It is set in the 1960’s during the civil rights movement. It is a story of hope and humor as it explores the racial boundaries that were so firmly defined at the time. Each of the white women in this book was very dependent on her “colored” maid. They talked about them endlessly and compared the maids to one another. As real  human beings, however, these black women were invisible until three of them made a huge sacrifice to make the lives of other women possible.

The connections to CST are the following:

  • Dignity of the human person
  • Equality among human beings
  • Overcoming racism
