On December 1 we celebrate World AIDS Day. On this day we remember all those in the world who have lost their battles against HIV/AIDS. Believing in the dignity of the human person, global solidarity, and the common good for all, we support those who advocate for universal access to prevention, treatment and care of those with HIV/AIDS and respect their human rights. This day is a reminder to us that HIV/AIDS is still with us. There is much to do.

The following statistics are from 2007:

  • 33 million people have HIV/AIDS. 30million are adults and 2 million are children.
  • 15 million of those with HIV/AIDS are women. In sub-Saharan Africa, 59% of cases are women. There are 11million orphaned children in Africa.
  • In 2007, there were 2.7 million new cases worldwide. Half of these were under the age of 25.

The sad fact is that since 1981, when we first learned about this disease 20 million people have died. In some of the sub-Saharan African countries, a whole generation of young parents are gone.
