Volunteers for Ministry
Every ministry welcomes volunteers. Cooking a meal and helping to serve is always an option for The Friendly Place. Several people can together plan and cook the meal. St. Michael’s provides a hot lunch every Tuesday and one Friday a month. We reimburse for the food; you do the cooking. In some instances, the same people have been doing it for years. Having more people can spread the responsibility over a longer time period. I f you are interested in helping, please contact Claire Inman. Call the office (326-7771) and they will have return your call.
Helping with recycling for the Bl. Marianne Cope Ministry is a ministry which can always use an extra pair of hands. This is a place where families can work together. The location is Immaculate Conception. For more information, contact Maureen Bagley. Call the office and Maureen will call you with the details.
Help with the Hospital Ministry is an ongoing need. For some people, taking the Eucharist to the sick is the perfect way in which to serve others. No matter how many people we recruit, however, there is always an empty slot on the schedule. Vacations and illness require that we have more than the minimum number of people to fill the schedule. This ministry requires one and one half hours two times per month. There is homebound ministry, also. For that, we have three volunteers. Interested? Call Cynthia M. Taylor at 960-0734.
PARISH MISSION
Capuchin Franciscan preacher Father William Cieslak will be conducting a parish mission entitled We Are a PRIESTLY PEPLE! at St. Michael Catholic Parish, Kailua-Kona, on November 20—23.
The Parish Mission program is an event designed to renew faith and strengthen convictions within a parish setting.
The renewal event begins Sunday and will continue every morning and repeated every evening through Wednesday. Father Bill will be speaking each morning at 10 AM at Immaculate Conception Church, and each evening at 6:30 PM in the tent at St. Michael’s. He will also preach during the weekend Masses at St. Michael’s, as well as the noon masses on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Church. A fellowship social with refreshments will follow all evening sessions. Wednesday evening will feature a Reconciliation Service.
There is no charge for this event. For more information, call 808-960-0734.
Father Bill Cieslak is a Capuchin priest and taught liturgy and sacraments at the Franciscan School of Theology (Graduate Theological Union) in Berkeley, CA for 25 years. He is the director of Preaching and Evangelization for the Capuchin Province of St. Joseph, headquartered in Detroit, MI. Besides liturgy and sacraments, Father Bill’s interest is in Franciscan spirituality & theology.
The Capuchins are an international community of friars modeling themselves after St. Francis of Assisi. The brothers of the Capuchin Province of St. Joseph, headquartered in Detroit, serve in a variety of ministries which includes social service, schools, chaplaincy, retreat houses and parishes in Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Montana, Arizona, California, Nicaragua, and Panama. Established in 1857, there are currently 184 members in the St. Joseph province.
Faith Journeys
For several weeks there has been a bulletin announcement about a pilgrimage that is to take place in June. It is a two-week pilgrimage to Ireland with three days as the Eucharistic Congress. Many of you are familiar with Monsignor John Mutiso Mbinda. Father will be the Spiritual Director for the pilgrimage and he will be here on Sunday, October 30th to speak at the Masses about it. He is the priest who introduced us to our mission in Kenya.
Food Pantry Hours Change
After the Food Pantry moves to Mokuaikaua Church, we will keep the same hours as Mokuaikaua already has. Therefore, Food Pantry will now be on Wednesday and Friday from 9AM to 10AM. There is parking behind Mokuaikaua Church.
You Are Invited to a Party
Father Jack is celebrating his 85th birthday. You are invited to his birthday party on Friday, October 21st at 5PM. This year, the potluck dinner will be held at the Kona Vistas Pavilion. T he Pavilion is located at Lako and Pualani Sts. right above the CHEVRON station. Father Jack will provide the beverages.
Adoration
The Franciscan archives credit Saint Francis of Assisi (who died in 1226) for starting Eucharistic Adoration in Italy. This process then spread from Umbria to other parts of Italy by the Franciscans. Francis had deep devotion to the Eucharist and St. Bonaventure commented that Francis would be swept in ecstasy after receiving Communion. For Francis the adoration of the Eucharist amounted to “seeing Christ.”
The Eucharist is exposed in a monstrance every Friday at Immaculate Conception from 7:30AM to 5:30PM. Benediction is held at 5:30PM. You are invited to visit during the day for individual Eucharistic Adoration.
Baptism
The next time the Sacrament of Baptism will be offered is the last Sunday of January. Parents who are considering January Baptism for their child will attend three preparation classes. Godparents must attend any one of the three classes. We offer the following options:
- Wednesday, Nov. 16th at 7PM or Sunday, Nov. 20th at 1PM. Both will be offered at Immaculate Conception Hall.
- Wednesday, Dec. 14th at 7PM or Sunday, Dec. 18th at 1PM. Both will be at Immaculate Conception Hall.
- Wednesday, January 11th at 7PM or Sunday, January 22nd at 1PM. Both will be at Immaculate Conception Hall.
Holy Kapa Quilt
Please remember to look at the beautiful quilt which will be won by some very lucky person. See this quilt outside the tent after Mass. If you don’t go over to the table, you’ll have no chance of winning!
The grand prize of this year’s Quilt Drawing is a stunning batik quilt of purple, green, aqua and yellow fabrics with many turtles in print, appropriately named “Turtle Cove.” A donation of $5 a ticket or 5 tickets for $20 is encouraged, with all proceeds going toward St. Michael’s Building Fund. If a visitor wins this wonderful quilt, it will be shipped to them free of charge. For more info, contact Wilhelmina van den Boom at 322-6616.

Respect Life Month
This October, the Catholic Church throughout the United States will observe Respect Life Month, an annual tradition now in its 40th year.
Beginning on Oct. 2, 2011—Respect Life Sunday—Catholics across the nation will join together to witness the inherent equality and transcendent value of every human being.
In countless liturgies and events we will give thanks to God for the gift of human life, and pray for the guidance and blessings on our efforts to defend the most valuable members of the human family. -Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo
