One ‘Ohana
Sunday, October 16th, will be the first of the seven One ‘Ohanas for this school year. The topic for the year will be the Sacraments. October’s presentation will be The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. We will meet in the tent at noon for lunch. There will be prayer, a short all-age presentation by Father Lio and the age-related groups. We hope to be finished by 2:30PM. Please attend and bring your children. This is Faith formation for all ages. We hope to see some of our kupuna also. Everyone is welcome; everyone is needed to keep our church community a vibrant, living community.
Faith Journeys
For several weeks there has been a bulletin announcement about a pilgrimage that is to take place in June. It is a two-week pilgrimage to Ireland with three days as the Eucharistic Congress. Many of you are familiar with Monsignor John Mutiso Mbinda. Father will be the Spiritual Director for the pilgrimage and he will be here on Sunday, October 30th to speak at the Masses about it. He is the priest who introduced us to our mission in Kenya.
Food Pantry Hours Change
After the Food Pantry moves to Mokuaikaua Church, we will keep the same hours as Mokuaikaua already has. Therefore, Food Pantry will now be on Wednesday and Friday from 9AM to 10AM. There is parking behind Mokuaikaua Church.
You Are Invited to a Party
Father Jack is celebrating his 85th birthday. You are invited to his birthday party on Friday, October 21st at 5PM. This year, the potluck dinner will be held at the Kona Vistas Pavilion. The Pavilion is located at Lako and Pualani Sts. right above the CHEVRON station. Father Jack will provide the beverages.
Adoration
The Franciscan archives credit Saint Francis of Assisi (who died in 1226) for starting Eucharistic Adoration in Italy. This process then spread from Umbria to other parts of Italy by the Franciscans. Francis had deep devotion to the Eucharist and St. Bonaventure commented that Francis would be swept in ecstasy after receiving Communion. For Francis the adoration of the Eucharist amounted to “seeing Christ.”
The Eucharist is exposed in a monstrance every Friday at Immaculate Conception from 7:30AM to 5:30PM. Benediction is held at 5:30PM. You are invited to visit during the day for individual Eucharistic Adoration.

On September 24th, St. Michael’s welcomed three children and their families to the Sacrament of Baptism. Keagan Santos-Sliva, Micaiah Garan, and Abigail Garan became members of the faith community of St. Michael the Archangel Church.
The next time the Sacrament of Baptism will be offered is the last Sunday of January. Parents who are considering January Baptism for their child will attend three preparation classes. Godparents must attend any one of the three classes. We offer the following options:
- Wednesday, Nov. 16th at 7PM or Sunday, Nov. 20th at 1PM. Both will be offered at Immaculate Conception Hall.
- Wednesday, Dec. 14th at 7PM or Sunday, Dec. 18th at 1PM. Both will be at Immaculate Conception Hall.

Respect Life Month
This October, the Catholic Church throughout the United States will observe Respect Life Month, an annual tradition now in its 40th year.
Beginning on Oct. 2, 2011—Respect Life Sunday—Catholics across the nation will join together to witness the inherent equality and transcendent value of every human being.
In countless liturgies and events we will give thanks to God for the gift of human life, and pray for the guidance and blessings on our efforts to defend the most valuable members of the human family. -Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo
Holy Kapa Quilt Drawing
The grand prize of this year’s Quilt Drawing is a stunning batik quilt of purple, green, aqua and yellow fabrics with many turtles in print, appropriately named “Turtle Cove.” A donation of $5 a ticket or 5 tickets for $20 is encouraged, with all proceeds going toward St. Michael’s Building Fund. This drawing/donation will begin the first weekend of October. Tickets will be distributed before and after the Masses. If a visitor wins this wonderful quilt, it will be shipped to them free of charge. For more info, contact Wilhelmina van den Boom at 322-6616.
Social Justice Book Club
Members of the Social Justice Book Club focused their September discussion on the lives of saints and how individual saints help us in our everyday lives as companions and examples. The October discussion will be centered on the book, The Help by Kathryn Stockett. Read the book or see the movie and join us on Thursday, October 13, at 12:30PM in Immaculate Conception Hall after the noon Mass.

Psalm 23:1-3a, 3b-4, 5, 6
This has to be the most popular, best known and best loved psalm in the Psalter. It is especially meaningful during Lent. As we are making our way towards the Easter Vigil, the psalm recapitulates the present reality and the hope of the elect. In terms of the present, the Lord is indeed the Shepherd of the elect, close to them, guiding them through these last weeks of preparation for initiation. Lent can be a difficult time for the elect, as they prepare to enter the Church. Sometimes this leads to difficulties with families, perhaps even periods of concern and even of doubt. That is why we have the Scrutinies, the prayer that every impediment, every demonic difficulty, may be removed from the path of the elect. The psalm provides exquisite reassurance: “Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil; for you are at my side with your rod and your staff that give me courage.” God is there, side by side with the elect, and indeed with all of us, never absent. At the Easter Vigil, God’s comforting presence reaches its climax as he invites and incorporates into his own life. He leads the elect to the restful waters of baptism in which they will be refreshed and renewed. They will be anointed with oil, with chrism, deepening the image of the Christ-Son in the newly baptized. The table of the Eucharist will be spread before them so that their incorporation will be complete. Fed with Christ’s body the elect join us as Christ’s Body, as we all struggle to give witness as Christ’s Body. © 2003, OCP. All rights reserved. - By Deacon Owen Cummings
