Social Justice Book Club

The next Book Club meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 8th after the noon Mass, at 12:30pm.  We will meet in Immaculate Conception Hall.   The September book discussion is My Life With the Saints by James Martin.  This book follows Jesuit Fr. James Martin’s spiritual journey with the saints.  It shows us how saints’ lives can challenge us, lead us, and guide us on our own journeys.  Each member is encouraged to choose a saint and share how that saint makes a difference in their lives.  There is always room for more members.  Bring your favorite saint and join us September 8th in our new location.

September Baptisms

September Baptism classes will be held on Wednesday, September 14th at 7PM or Sunday, September 18th at 1PM.  Baptisms will take place on Saturday, September 24th at the 5PM Mass.

Baptism Scheduling Information

Effective July 2011, the process for Baptism of infants and young children has changed.  Baptisms will be done only on the last Sundays of September, January and June.  Baptism is a gift that parents give to their children.  It is also a commitment parents make to raise their child in the Catholic Faith they have professed for the child.  Many couples who bring a baby to be baptized are unsure of what the Sacrament of Baptism is or what it does.  Many of the parents either no longer attend Mass, or else they attend only occasionally.  If the Church agrees to baptize a child, then it is the Church’s responsibility to prepare the parents or whoever will raise that child.  We are committed to doing that.

Parents are required to attend three distinct classes prior to having their child baptized.  If you select September as the month for Baptism, you must attend a class in July, one in August and one in early September.  Each class will be offered twice a month.  One will be on a Sunday and the other on an evening during the week to allow for options.  We will publish the dates for the entire year so that parents can plan ahead.  Missing a class will delay the Baptism.

The 3-sessions will be geared toward helping couples understand what they are asking for their children, participate in small group discussions, meet other couples who are preparing to have their child baptized and listen to couples who have already been through the experience. Godparents/Christian Witnesses must attend one session:

Baptismal Preparation for January Baptism

Session 2- Attend either Wed., December 14th at 7PM OR Sunday, December 18th at 1PM

St. Michael’s Liturgical Calendar 2012

Heritage Committee members are busy collecting pictures and laying out our St. Michael’s Parish 2012 liturgical calendar.  Members will distribute the calendars in late October 2011.  They are free to each parish family, while supplies last.  Additional calendars may be purchased for only $5.00.  Each page will feature photographs of events or activities at St. Michael’s, both “vintage” and current.  Along with the photos and calendar page with liturgical event details, businesses and individuals have an opportunity to advertise.

The calendars are funded by our generous advertisers.  The cost of your ad is $100.  If a specific month is desired, your preferential ad placement cost is $200.  For advertisers wishing to purchase 6 ads, the cost is $500.  If you are one of the many talented and generous people among our parish community, we need you.  Please contact Fern Gavelek: 329-0833 to place your ad.

St. Michael’s Feast Day Celebration

Don’t miss the celebration of St. Michael’s Feast on Sept. 25th.  Begin the day by attending the Eucharistic Liturgy at either the 7AM or the 9AM in the tent.  Afterward move to Hale Halawai.  Prepare to spend this day from 10:30AM to 3PM with the community enjoying fun, food and fellowship.  Special attractions will be the following and more:  Country Store / Beer Garden / Silent Auction / Taste of St. Michael’s Cultural Foods / Keiki Games / Keiki and Youth Talent Show.  Pack up the family and come.  There will be something for everyone!

National Collection for The Catholic University America

Today’s second collection is for The Catholic University of America, the national university of the Catholic Church in the United States; located in Washington, D.C.  CUA provides an academically rigorous education guided by Catholic intellectual tradition to nearly 7,000 students every year.  Every dollar we give directly supports financial aid for students from dioceses across the country, including ours.  Please be generous.

Registration for 1st Year Confirmation & First Holy Communion

Thank you to all who registered their children for 1st-year Confirmation and First Reconciliation and Eucharist on August 7th or August 14th.  Because you took the time to register now, it allowed us to place an order for whatever books and supplies we need.

One ‘Ohana

One ‘Ohana sessions will resume on Sunday, October 16th.  We invite all families with and without children to attend.  One ‘Ohana is our Faith Formation Program.  We will meet in the tent after the 11 AM Mass.  Lunch will be served, after which there will be prayer, age-related activities, and time for the children to share what they learned.  The topics will all be related to the seven Sacraments.  The dates to put on your calendar for this calendar year are the following:  October 16, 2011/ November 13, 2011/ December 11, 2011.

Bible Study Class Change of Venue

With the demolition of the office building next week, the Bible Study class will begin meeting at Fr. Jack's house the second week of September.  For those of you who regularly attend Bible Study, please call Susan to let us know which day of the week is best for you to meet.  Once the day is decided upon, maps to Fr. Jack's house will be made available to you.

Workshop for Parents

On Saturday, September 10th from 10AM to 12noon there will be a workshop for parents of children in Grades 1-5.  The purpose of the workshop will be to help parents put together a toolbox of ideas about how to integrate and continue the lessons of One ‘Ohana in the home.  This workshop is for parents only.

Joanne Agdeppa, Trudy Batemen and Shirley David will conduct this workshop.  Bringing parents together without the children will allow time for parents to discuss those areas in which they would like help from the Church.

After the lunch, there will be a conference with Father Lio, Carrie Harris, and Cynthia Taylor for parents of those children who have registered to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist.  The conference will last one hour (1PM to 2PM).  At least ONE parent must attend if you want your child to receive the Sacraments in 2012.  Both will be held at Immaculate Conception Hall in Holualoa.
