Marianist BILAC

Marianist Big Island Liturgy & Arts Conference (BILAC) builds on the communal and welcoming spirit of the host culture of Hawaii.  The conference features concerts, prayer, ministry workshops, keynote presentations and more in an atmosphere of loving “ohana” (family).  The name BILAC commemorates its first home on the Big Island.  In recent years the religious and lay members of the Marianist Family, along with the Marianist Center of Hawaii, Chaminade University of Honolulu, and St. Louis School have accepted sponsorship and strive to maintain BILAC’s founding spirit, a spirit closely aligned with the Marianist Charism.

The next BILAC will be held November 3rd—5th, 2011 (Thurs through Sun) at Chaminade University / St. Louis School / Marianist Center of Hawaii.  The keynote speakers are ValLimar Jansen (Friday, Nov. 4th) and Fr. Ricky Manalo, CSP (Saturday, Nov. 5th).  The Sept. 15th deadline cost = $150 / Oct. 15 deadline = $175 / and Oct. 30 deadline = $200.  Registration forms are available in the parish office, or you can register online at www.marianisthawaii.org and click on “Marianist BILAC.”

Workshop for Parents

On Saturday, Sept. 10th from 10AM to 12noon there will be a workshop for parents of children in Grades 1-5. The purpose of the workshop will be to help parents put together a toolbox of ideas about how to integrate and continue the lessons of One ‘Ohana in the home.

Joanne Agdeppa and Shirley David will conduct this workshop. Bringing parents together without the children will allow time for parents to discuss those areas in which they would like help from the Church. It is not mandatory that you attend; it is simply an effort to be helpful.  PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS.  We will serve a light lunch for all who wish to talk to friends and/or meet new people.

After lunch, there will be a conference with Fr. Lio and Cynthia Taylor for parents of those children who have registered to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist.  The conference will last one hour (1PM to 2PM).  The purpose will be to explain the process for sacramental preparation for the children and Adult Faith Formation for the parents.  At least ONE parent must attend if you want your child to receive the Sacraments in 2012.  Even if you were unable to attend the morning session, please come for the one hour instructional session at 1PM.  Both will be held at Immaculate Conception Hall in Holualoa.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word

Children’s Liturgy of the Word will begin today, August 7th during the 9AM Mass.  Father will call forward all preschool and kindergarten children who wish to participate.  It will be held in Kamiano Hall during the Readings and the homily, and will last one-half hour.  The children will return to finish Mass with their parents.

September Baptism

The August classes for parents who are preparing for September Baptism of their child will be held at St. Michael’s on Wednesday evening, August 10th and Sunday afternoon, August 14th at 1PM.  Parents are free to choose whichever time suits you best.  Godparents must attend at least one of the classes before Saturday, September 24th.  Because of the celebration of St. Michael’s Feast Day on the 25th, all Baptisms will take place at the 5pm Mass on Saturday.

Baptism Scheduling Information

Effective July 2011, the process for Baptism of infants and young children has changed.  Baptisms will be done only on the last Sundays of September, January and June.

Baptism is a gift that parents give to their children.  It is also a commitment parents make to raise their child in the Catholic Faith they have professed for the child.  Many couples who bring a baby to be baptized are unsure of what the Sacrament of Baptism is or what it does.  Many of the parents either no longer attend Mass, or else they attend only occasionally.  If the Church agrees to baptize a child, then it is the Church’s responsibility to prepare the parents or whoever will raise that child.  We are committed to doing that.

Parents are required to attend three distinct classes prior to having their child baptized.  If you select September as the month for Baptism, you must attend a class in July, one in August and one in early September.  Each class will be offered two times a month.  One will be on a Sunday and the other on an evening during the week to allow for options.  We will publish the dates for the entire year so that parents can plan ahead.  Missing a class will delay the Baptism.

The three sessions will be geared toward helping couples understand what they are asking for their children, participate in small group discussions, meet other couples who are preparing to have their child baptized and listen to couples who have already been through the experience.

Godparents and Christian Witnesses must attend one of the three sessions:

Baptismal Preparation for January Baptism

  • Session 1- Attend either Wed., Nov. 9th at 7PM OR Sunday, Nov. 6th at 1PM
  • Session 2- Attend either Wed., Dec. 14th at 7PM OR Sunday, Dec. 18th at 1PM
  • Session 3- Attend either Wed. Jan.11th at 7PM OR Sunday, Jan. 22nd at 1PM

Baptismal Preparation for June

  • Session Dates for March, April, May TBD

Baptized Adults Who Wish to Become Catholic

If you have friends or relatives who are baptized Christians and who would like to join the Catholic Church, they may begin preparation at any time during the year.  With very few exceptions, those who have already been baptized in a Protestant denomination have no need to be re-baptized when they become Catholics.  The length of time the preparation takes is completely dependent on where the individual is in their practice of the Christian faith and their understanding of what we believe as Catholics.  It can take anywhere from three months to one year or longer.

We have had five such adults in the past 8 months, all brought to the Catholic Church by a friend or spouse.  If you know someone who is thinking of becoming a Catholic, you can walk with them on this journey.  For inquiries, contact Cynthia M. Taylor at 960-0734.

Registration for First Year Confirmation & First Communion

Registration for Confirmation and First Communion will be held on Sat./Sun. August 6th-7th and Sat./Sun. August 13th-14th at St. Michael’s.  There will be a table outside of the tent at each Mass.  Please note that these dates are just for registering children for the Sacraments.  Registration for One ‘Ohana will take place in September.

RICA  (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)

It is now time to begin planning for 2011-2012 Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. RCIA is a process of preparation for adults and children over the age of seven who wish to be baptized into the Catholic Church. For information, please contact either Zola Ingram for RCIA for children between the ages of 7 and 18 at  329-4949 or Cynthia Taylor for adult RCIA at  960-0734.

Holy Ghost Feast Celebration and Bazaar

Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Honoka’a is having their annual feast/ fundraiser on Saturday, August 14th.  It opens with procession and Mass at 8AM.  The Bazaar begins after the Opening Ceremonies and ends at 3PM.  They have baked goods, ethnic concessions, plants, fresh malasadas, a live auction, and many other attractions.  If you are interested in attending or buying raffle tickets, call Cindy at 775-9591.  This is always a well-attended event.

Social Justice Book Club

Our One Catholic ‘Ohana Social Justice Book Club will be discussing Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson on Thursday, August 11th.  We will meet for an hour in the Luika Kaumaka Room after the noon Mass.  Three Cups of Tea is the first of two books that follows Greg Mortenson’s journey to build schools and educate both girls and boys in Afghanistan and Pakistan.  The discussion should be lively since the recent 60 Minutes “exposé” surrounding Greg Mortenson’s projects.  The Book Club is always looking for new members and discussion participants. Come join us on August 11th.

Global Solidarity Ministry Fundraising

St. Michael’s Global Solidarity Ministry invites you to a Dinner Dance on Saturday, August 27th at the King Kam Hotel to raise funds for its projects in Kenya and the Philippines.  The Dinner Dance ticket costs $45 per person and will be available after the weekend Masses starting July 30th.

The clinic project in Miaani, Kenya, which provides limited health services to the residents of the village, needs financial support to meet its operational needs such as the salary of a nurse and lab technician, medicines and other medical supplies.  Global Solidarity Ministry also provides scholarship grants to high school girls who do not have the financial resources to attend school.

In the Philippines, Global Solidarity Ministry supports three (3) projects; namely, a) the Payatas Youth Hope Center where out-of-school youth are given livelihood training, b) Mater Dolorosa Youth Center which provides board/lodging to at-risk children, and c) the Mary Queen of Heaven Missionaries who rehabilitate victims of prostitution and human trafficking.  Global Solidarity Ministry needs your support to allow us to continue these projects.
