Farewell Celebration for Father John Fredy

Today is THE day (June 26th, 2011). We will gather in joy with a tinge of sadness to honor Fr. John Fredy for his five years of serving the people of St. Michael’s Parish. We wish him a fond farewell and offer him the promise of our daily prayers. Father John has touched many hearts and he has inspired many to make positive changes their lives during his tenure at St. Michael’s Church. There is no doubt we will miss him.

St. Michael’s PayPal Account

St. Michael the Archangel Church has established an account with PayPal to accept donations.  This account is accessible from our website onecatholicohana.org with a direct link to PayPal.  The Donation Button on our website allows for only one donation at a time.  Donations may not be set up for recurring donations.  You will need to select what type of donation you are making from the drop-down menu prior to selecting “Donate.”  Receipts will be issued by PayPal and your donation will be recorded in our parish records for the annual giving report if you are a parishioner; or your donation will be acknowledged by a letter from the parish.

Emergencies and Warnings

Whenever an emergency occurs such as a fire, wind damage, tsunami, or  the like; or when a warning is issued by a State or County agency for a given day or period, all activities, including Masses at St. Michael’s, will be cancelled for the day or the period set forth in the warning.

Ministry of Baptism Volunteers Needed

Parents bringing their children to be baptized would benefit from the experience of meeting other parents who have had their children baptized and are bringing them up in the Catholic Church. Grandparents, also, have much to offer young couples about encouraging their children to be faithful in the practice of the Faith. Please volunteer to share your experience with younger couples as a part of our formation for parents preparing for the baptism of their children.

Couples will prepare for three months. Please refer to the article on Baptism scheduling. We need a large team of parents to help so that it would require you to attend one session in a three month period. That means, I need six couples to cover each three months of classes.

Please prayerfully consider helping with this program. It is in these kinds of ministries that we help not only other couples, but we grow ourselves in our love and understanding of our own faith. PLEASE. Please contact Cynthia at 960-0734

Baptism Scheduling Information

Beginning in July 2011, the process for Baptism of infants and young children will change.  Baptisms will be done only on the last Sundays of September, January and June.

Baptism is a gift that parents give to their children.  It is also a commitment parents make to raise their child in the Catholic Faith they have professed for the child.  Many couples who bring a baby to be baptized are unsure of what the Sacrament of Baptism is or what it does.  Many of the parents either no longer attend Mass, or else they attend only occasionally.  If the Church agrees to baptize a child, then it is the Church’s responsibility to prepare the parents or whoever will raise that child.  We are committed to doing that.

Parents are required to attend three distinct classes prior to having their child baptized.  If you select September as the month for Baptism, you must attend a class in July, one in August and one in early September.  Each class will be offered two times a month.  One will be on a Sunday and the other on an evening during the week to allow for options.  We will publish the dates for the entire year so that parents can plan ahead.  Missing a class will delay the Baptism.

The three sessions will be geared toward helping couples understand what they are asking for their children, participate in small group discussions, meet other couples who are preparing to have their child baptized and listen to couples who have already been through the experience.

Godparents and Christian Witnesses must attend one of the three sessions:

Baptismal Preparation for the September Baptism

Session 1- Attend either Wed., July 13th at 7PM OR Sunday, July 24th at 1PM

Session 2- Attend either Wed., Aug. 10th at 7PM OR Sunday, Aug. 14th at 1PM

Session 3- Attend either Wed., Sept 14th at 7PM OR Sunday, Sept 18th at 1PM

Baptismal Preparation for January Baptism

Session 1- Attend either Wed., Nov. 9th at 7PM OR Sunday, Nov. 6th at 1PM

Session 2- Attend either Wed., Dec. 14th at 7PM OR Sunday, Dec. 18th at 1PM

Session 3- Attend either Wed. Jan.11th at 7PM OR Sunday, Jan 22nd at 1PM

Baptismal Preparation for June

—Session Dates for March, April, May TBD

Baptized Adults Who Wish to Become Catholics

If you have friends or relatives who are baptized Christians and who would like to join the Catholic Church, they may begin preparation at any time during the year.  With very few exceptions, those who have already been baptized in a Protestant denomination have no need to be re-baptized when they become Catholics.  The length of time the preparation takes is completely dependent on where the individual is in their practice of the Christian faith and their understanding of what we believe as Catholics.  It can take anywhere from three months to one year or longer.

We have had five such adults in the past 8 months, all brought to the Catholic Church by a friend or spouse.  If you know someone who is thinking becoming a Catholic, you can walk with them on this journey.  For inquiries, please contact Cynthia M. Taylor at 960-0734.

Art Show

Suzanne Bearth and Tess Rumley are having an ongoing art show at Rumley Gallery inside the King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel until June 30th.  Suzanne will be showcasing her edible and visual art and Tess will be showcasing her wood art.  The net proceeds of this show will be donated to the building of the new St. Michael’s Church.

Kona Marathon Today!

Half a road closure due to Kona Marathon is TODAY  Sunday, June 26th!  The south-bound lane of Alii Drive will be closed from 5am through 12:30pm. The north-bound lane will not be restricted at any time.  This will allow people to enter the Church from either the north- or south-bound direction of Alii Drive.  Anyone leaving the Church and wanting to go south, will be routed north to Hualalai Road where they can then travel south on Kuakini Highway.  There will be a police officer working the intersection of Alii Drive and Hualalai Road.

One ‘Ohana

One ‘Ohana will begin again in September with a Sept. 10th Saturday workshop for parents.  There will be talks to assist you in your roles as educators in the faith of our children.

The One ‘Ohana sessions will begin on October 9th.  As One ‘Ohana, we will be learning about the Sacraments.  Each month will focus on a different Sacrament.  Some of our parishioners learned about the Seven Sacraments when they were children.  What is widely unknown is that after Vatican II was over in 1968, each of the Sacraments gradually underwent changes in the way they were administered.  In some cases, the names of some of the Sacraments were changed to better reflect what the sacraments do for us.  What we formerly called the Sacrament of Penance is now called the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  What we once called Extreme Unction is now called the Sacrament of Anointing.

Please begin marking your calendars.  All the One ‘Ohana dates will be published soon.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word

On August 7th, we will resume Children’s Liturgy of the Word during the 9am Mass.  It is being offered for Preschool and Kindergarten children.  We have two volunteers but we are looking for another to help lead the children.  The activities are based on the Sunday Readings for each week.  They require only minimal preparation on the part of the leader.

The children are dismissed for Children’s Liturgy of the Word before the First Reading and return to Mass after the homily.  A number of parents have asked us to do this for the little ones. In order to make this happen for the children, however, we need your help. If this is a ministry you think you would enjoy, please contact Cynthia M. Taylor at 960-0734.

Collection of School Supplies for Catholic Charities

Catholic Charities has asked each parish for help with school supplies for their children in foster care.  We, in turn, are asking you to bring school supplies to the Masses on July 9th-10th.  There will be a table outside the tent where you can place your donation.

Pillowcases

The response for pillowcases and pillowcase dresses has been overwhelming.  We have received calls and participation from as far away as Honolulu, Kea’au, and Hilo.  The dresses and/or fabric have been pouring in.  Women from St. Joseph’s Parish in Hilo are now making dresses for us to send.  While this is all happening, we have not yet had our own sew-in.  Eventually, we will have hundreds of dresses to donate to “Dress a Girl Around the World.”

If you have pillowcases, you may bring them on July 9th—10th at the same time and place as school supplies for Catholic Charities.

Credit Cards Are Accepted

St. Michael the Archangel Church, as a convenience to our parishioners and visitors, now accepts credit card payments for donations or purchases at our Gift Shop.
