Tennis Tournament

The Tennis Tournament has been rescheduled for June 11th—12th (Sat-Sun).  The details are the same as before.  It will be held at the Holua Court.  The event is a fundraiser.  Proceeds will be donated to replace the earthquake-damaged St. Michael’s Church.

We will still need prizes and items for our Silent Auction.  Isabel Vinson is responsible for the Silent Auction.  You can reach her at 326-2420.

Registration for the Tournament must be done through Lovette Llantos online at http://www.gonnalove-it.com/tennis.  Once online, click on June 11—12: Team Tennis Fundraiser for St. Michael’s Church.  There will be instructions on how to pay the $25 registration fee and an address for where to send the check.

Help with the lunches is still needed!  Please call Renee-Mae Ota at 322-2838 to offer your delicious dish.

Confirmation

On Saturday, May 14th, Confirmation for the West Hawaii Vicariate parishes will be held at St. Michael’s.  The Mass will begin at 10:30am.  Approximately 32 teens from four of the five West Hawaii parishes will be Confirmed.  There are 10 young men and women from St. Michael’s in the group.  Fr. Gary Secor, the Vicar General for the Diocese of Honolulu, will preside and administer the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Sponsors, families and friends of the Confirmandi will attend BUT we invite other members of our community to be present.  We can demonstrate to our young members that we support them in each step of the faith journey.

Lunch will be served after the Mass.  You are invited to break bread with the Vicariate community, too!

Those receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation from St. Michael’s Parish are the following:

Paul Abaire, Kevin Haleamau, Kylie Amarino, Bronsten Kossow, Grace Choe, Kayla Milke, Joy Choe, Lindsay Milke, Cassidy Grantham, Ashley Mulvihill

One ‘Ohana

Our last One ‘Ohana Gathering for this year will take place on Sunday—May 15th.  Please mark your calendars to attend.  The topic will be from darkness to light...from captivity to freedom.  Since we are still in the Easter Season, we will discuss a number of topics that relate to this liturgical season.

We will present several simple activities in ministry for families during the summer months.  These sessions are over until September, but faith formation and service to others never end.

Blessed Mother Marianne Cope, OSF

Just one day after the Feast of St. Damien, please join us at Annunciation Church in Waimea for Mass and veneration of the relic of Blessed Marianne Cope.  That is Wednesday, May 11th at 6pm.  These two contemporaries gave their lives to care for the lepers of Hawaii, although Mother Marianne lived much longer than St. Damien.

We are honored that the Sisters of St. Francis are bringing Mother Marianne’s relic to our Vicariate for the benefit of the Catholics of West Hawaii.  Mother Marianne needs one more miracle attributed to her intercession before being officially declared a Saint of the Catholic Church.

If you are able to join the other members of the West Hawaii Vicariate on the 11th, please call the Parish Office.  Supper will be served after the Mass, and we need to give Annunciation some idea of numbers.

National Federation of the Blind

Meetings are held the 2nd Monday of each month:  next one is May 9th from 10am—12noon at Hale Halawai.  Contact Brandi Konrady at 989-9299.

Capital Campaign

Thank you to all who have continued to fulfill their pledges so that we can build our Church.  I understand that it requires discipline and sacrifice.  I, too, have made a pledge and for me, it sometimes means one less trip to Starbucks or one more lunch at home rather than picking up a sandwich when I am doing errands.  For others of you, that sacrifice may be not going to a movie you really want to see or not buying a book or a toy or a new dress.  That money adds up quickly and so will our fund if everyone gives something.

A special thanks to our visitors.  These are people who visit while they are vacationing and have appreciated what St. Michael’s offers.  Every day, we receive donations from visitors who want to see a new Church when they come to Kona again.

Introducing the 3rd Edition of the Roman Missal

Question:  As we know it, will the Eucharistic Liturgy or Mass change, or is it just the translation?

Answer:    The Mass will not change.  It is the celebration of the Paschal Mystery, just as always.  Some of the words will be modified.  That includes some of our responses.

Question:  Will any of the music change?

Answer:     Some of the Service Music will change in order to accommodate the revised translation.  A good example is the Gloria.  Some of the words will change, but the meaning will never change.  We will all learn the revised translation.

Social Justice Book Club

On May 19th at 12:30pm (in Luika Kaumaka Rm) members of the Social Justice Book Club will be discussing the Road of Lost Innocence by Somaly Mam.  The book is a true story of children sold into sex slavery.  A book discussion often is the tool to open our eyes to injustices in the world.  Before we even started to read the book, members were already thinking about the issues of sexual slavery and human trafficking.  These are problems not only in Cambodia, where this book takes place, but also right here in Hawaii.

We welcome you to share in the discussion which will include “What can we do?”  There is an excellent video called to whom it may concern, produced by Franciscan International.  This video is on www.capuchin.org.  It outlines the scope of the problem of sexual trafficking; routes where girls are being trafficked from and to; what can be done to assist in fighting it.  If you don’t have the opportunity to read the book, the video is a good way to learn about the issues.

Already we have identified a project to make dresses out of pillowcases and fabric scraps that are being sent with missionaries around the world to help girls look cared for so they’ll be less likely to be stolen off the streets.  You can help by collecting new or little-used pillowcases or fabric remnants, elastic, thread, and bias tape.  In the fall, we will be announcing a sewing bee to make the dresses.

Baccalaureate Mass to be Held Sunday, May 15

2011 Graduates will be honored at the 9am Mass on Sunday, May 15th.  If you are a 2011 High School or College Graduate, please drop off your photo and information at the parish office, or send a digital photo, along with the name of your school and future plans, to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Food Pantry Slips to be Distributed

This weekend at all the Masses, Food Pantry slips will be made available.  Please take a food slip from the basket and bring the food item listed on it with you to Mass next weekend.  This monthly plea to parishioners to help bring in food for our hungry brothers and sisters has been so helpful—and very much appreciated.  God bless you for your kind generosity!

Where to Send Bulletin Articles

You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  Please do not send or bring anything into the parish office that is handwritten.  If you do not have email, please ask a friend to send it in for you.  Mahalo!

Blessed Marianne Ministry

We have a new, very busy, ministry in the parish.  Have you ever been at the airport and witnessed an unsuspecting traveler trying to go through security with jars of jam, honey, oil, unopened cans of soda or fresh bottles of water in their carry-on baggage?  People easily forget that these liquids will be confiscated, but where does it go?  The trash is the answer.

Since we are serving so many poor and/or needy people in the community, St. Michael’s Parish has agreed with the airport that we will pick up the bags of trash, sort it, sanitize it and distribute it to those in need.  This article says “we,” but in reality this is a one woman operation right now.  Maureen Bagley (who just moved here in November) picks up these huge bags at the airport twice a week.  She spends her day preparing the products for redistribution, and the following day she delivers them.

Everything is cleaned, packed in bins and redistributed to the following locations:  The Friendly Place, our St. Michael’s Food Pantry, Child and Family Services (who shares with Bridge House and BISAC), Alana, and the Recycling Center.  One package a week goes to the Women’s Prison in Hilo, also.

In her ministry, Maureen is providing St. Michael’s an opportunity to touch the hearts of so many people in the community.  She has been doing this for 3 months by herself and needs some help.  Next month look for the table she will have outside the tent.  If each family will sign up to help for one hour a month, it will provide time and manpower for the ministry to expand further.  With the multitude of needs in the community, one person cannot do more than what Maureen is doing presently.  If you want to talk further or see what she is doing, call Maureen Bagley at (732) 433-2350.

The Rosary Group News

As the month of May begins, a month in which we traditionally honor all mothers, let us join together in honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of Jesus Christ and the Mother of the Church.

The Crowning of the Blessed Virgin Mary will take place at the Grotto after the 7am Mass on Friday, May 13th—the Feast Day of Our Lady of Fatima.  Rosary will follow.
