One ‘Ohana

One ‘Ohana will be held today, February 6th.  Please join the community for lunch at noon.  There will be prayer and age-related activities and sharing of information by children, teens and adults.  Today’s topic is WE BELIEVE IN GOD THE FATHER ALMIGHTY.  We look forward to seeing you.

Adult Confirmation

There are adults in the parish who, for one reason or another, have not received the Sacrament of Confirmation.  If you are a practicing Catholic and would like to receive this Sacrament, there will be two preparation classes.  The first class will be held on Sunday, April 10th at 1PM in Kamiano Hall at St. Michael’s.  The second class will be held on Sunday, April 17th at 1PM in the same place.  It is necessary to attend both classes and it would be very helpful if you would bring your Confirmation sponsor with you.  Confirmation will be held on May 14th.  You will need proof of your Baptism.

If you have questions or you wish to register, please call Cynthia M. Taylor at 960-0734.

Catholic Campaign for Human Development

In November, we took up our annual collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development.  We tell you each year that this money is used to provide grants to low income groups in the United States who have documented ways of helping themselves out of poverty. The projects that qualify for grant money are varied. They may involve low-income housing, seed money for very small businesses, job training, workers’ rights, and many other things that improve life for the poor.  This money and the opportunities it provides stays in our country.

In 2010, the Diocese of Honolulu gave $11,000 to a group in Kalihi, Oahu.  The money was given to involve the youth (many of whom were from Our Lady of the Mount Parish) in efforts to regenerate “community” in every aspect in the Kalihi neighborhoods.  The group is called ROC which means Restore Our Community.  The results to date are amazing.

On the other side of Oahu, ten middle school kids at St. John Vianney Parish in Kailua, entered the CCHD Multi-Media Art Contest.  They put together a video using music, art, interviews, etc. about a program called Family Promise.  St. John’s participates in this program for homeless families.  St. John’s won the national CCHD prize for the best presentation and the youth went to New Orleans to accept their prize.  For their work, they received $500 from CCHD.  The heart-warming part of this whole story is that the kids in Kailua, Oahu gave their reward money to help the kids in Kalihi with their work in the Kalihi community.  This is a small but meaningful example of how your donations work.

Thank you for your help.

February Parish Mission/Retreat  New Time

The dates for the Parish Retreat are Monday, Feb. 28th through Thursday, Mar. 3rd.  Father Armand Nigro, SJ will lead the Retreat on The Journey to Conversion through Prayer.  Father would like the main talk to be at 10:00AM.  The Mass will be at noon, allowing a 15 minute break between the talk and the Mass.

During the afternoon hours, Father will make himself available for Confession or Spiritual Direction.  There will be a sign-up sheet available to allow everyone who wishes to may have a chance to talk with Father.

Father Nigro hopes that those who make the Retreat will spend considerable time in personal prayer either at St. Michael’s or at home.  He advises that we use Scripture as a source of prayer.  He describes Scripture as a way of listening to God.  Hopefully each person has access to a Bible.  Father’s personal preference is the Catholic Study Bible which is a longer version of the New American Bible (used in the Lectionary).  Father will talk about that, but whatever Bible you have selected for yourself is fine.

If you have to miss a day of the Retreat, you are welcome to attend whatever days you are able.  The topic for the entire fours days will be different aspects of prayer, with special emphasis on praying with the Scriptures.

Golf Tournament Mahalo

To all who were involved in any way in our recent Golf Tournament, please accept my sincere gratitude for your time, your financial assistance, and your enthusiasm.  As a community, you came together lending your creative talents to what became a memorable event in our parish history.  A very special thank you to the committee members.  They met weekly to plan the details and promote excitement in the community about our Golf Tournament.  In every sense of the word, this was a success.  After the game, everyone was ready for the delicious meal prepared by Reed Bender and Music arranged by Chuck Connors.

Big Island Faith Formation Conference

This year’s theme for Big Island Enrichment Day is “Celebrate Family – Celebrate Life.”  It will be held on Saturday, March 5th at Annunciation Church in Waimea.  The day begins with registration at 8am, followed by Mass at 9am, and workshops from 10:30am to 2:30pm.  You can choose to attend any one or two of the following workshops:

  • Introduction to Bio Ethics:  (Fr. Jack Ryan)  It is important for all Catholics to examine and to understand today’s bioethical issues.  This class will present an overview of bioethics and give participants an opportunity to explore bioethical issues in the light of Catholic teaching.
  • Rites, Signs, and Symbols of the Catholic Mass:  (Deacon Modesto Cordero)  This session will explore some of the changes to the Order of the Mass – words that are repeated at every Mass every day.
  • Prayer, The Ignatian Way:  (Tony & Bonnie Boquer – Introduction by Jayne Mondoy: Praying as St. Ignatius of Loyola)  Ignatian spirituality is a spirituality for everyday life.  It insists that God is present in our world and active in our lives.  This workshop will introduce participants to a pathway of deeper prayer and good decisions guided by keen discernment.
  • Play, Pray, Sing!  Music in Liturgy:  (Fay Pabo)  How to plan music for the Liturgy and some segments on selection music for Youth Mass.  Liturgical music serves the liturgy.  It brings out the liturgical texts making them more effective, and it unifies the assembly.  Participants will be introduced to the liturgical, musical, and pastoral considerations when selecting the most appropriate music for Liturgy.
  • Act Like a Family – Youth Ministry / The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe:  (Lisa Gomes and the Big Island Youth Team)  To discover and discuss the many ways family members can make us crazy, keep us sane, and how and why we can both love them and can be frustrated by them in the very same moment.  *This is a 3-hour workshop.  Morning workshop continues in afternoon workshop.
  • Catholic Apologetics – Spanish Workshop:  (Fr. John Fredy Quintero; Fr. Juan Pablo Galeano; Fr. Victor Valez)  To know the Church and its mission today – in the 21st Century.

Registration forms are available in the parish office.  The cost is $10 for the day, which includes lunch.  (There is no refund for cancellation.)  If you have any questions, please call Margie Fujimoto at 323-3469 / 217-6054 (cell).

Waiaha Cemetery Project

Do you have relatives or ancestors whose remains are buried in the Waiaha Cemetery (more commonly known as “Holualoa Catholic Cemetery”) on Mamalahoa Highway in Holualoa?  The Heritage Committee would like your help with our project to create maps and databases of our North Kona Catholic Community cemeteries.  The cemetery project is in keeping with the Heritage Committee mission to document our One Catholic ‘Ohana history.  If you can help us with identifying gravesites in the Waiaha Cemetery, please contact Joyce Trask at 322-0915.

Liturgical Ministers Training

There will be a quarterly ministry training for ALL Liturgical ministers on Saturday, February 19th from 9:00AM to 12:00PM in the tent at St. Michael’s.  Please plan to attend. A continental breakfast will be served.

Anointing of the Sick

Friday, Feb. 11th is the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes.  It seems fitting on this day to offer the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick since so many people afflicted with illness travel to Lourdes to seek the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes.  It is a sacrament of healing, peace and forgiveness. The Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament for those who are seriously ill with acute or chronic illness, those who are facing surgery, and those who are experiencing the weakness that come with age.  Father John will offer the Anointing of the Sick at the 7:00am Mass.

Social Justice Book Club Meeting

Our One Catholic Ohana Book Club monthly meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at 12:30PM following the noon Mass. The Book Club selections and discussions will focus on topics related to social justice.  On February 10th, we will discuss The Little Bee by Chris Cleave.  On March 10, we will discuss Mountains Beyond Mountains, by Tracy Kidder.  All are welcome.  Bring a bag lunch and join us on February 10th in the Luika Kaumaka Room.

Requests for Mass Intentions

Requests for Masses come in on an almost daily basis.  Most times the request is made by phone, but payment is sent either through the mail or put in with the weekend collection.  If you send in your payment or put it in the collection, please be sure to write on the outside of the envelope the name of the person you are requesting the Mass for, and the date and time of the Mass.  This will help to apply your monetary donation to the correct Mass (and keeps me from going crazy).  Mahalo! Susan

Support Our Advertisers

Our Sunday bulletin is an important way for us to communicate with you.  Producing it every week could be very costly, but through the generosity of the businesses that you see advertised on the back cover, these ads support some of our weekly production costs.  Most of these advertisers are members of our local community, and many belong to our parish.

During these difficult economic times, we encourage you to support these advertisers with your patronage.  Tell the business owners that you appreciate their support of our parish through their advertisements in the bulletin.  This is one small way that we can work within our own community to weather the challenges that we face.  A strong and vibrant parish is good for our community and a thriving business community is good for our parish.

Electronic Bulletin

It is never too late to sign up for the electronic version of the Church bulletin!  Get your bulletin in your in-box by Thursday and read it before coming to Mass on Saturday or Sunday.  You get the news earlier and the Church saves paper. There is the additional benefit of photo galleries.  Interested?  Just call the parish office or email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Important Notice About The Bulletin

If there is an announcement that needs to go in the following week’s bulletin, please email it to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it by Tuesday afternoon at 4PM.  That will be the cut-off time each week for announcements.  Kindly do not send or bring anything into the office for the bulletin that is handwritten.  If you do not have email, please ask a friend to send it in for you.

Follow us on TWITTER!

To coincide with our One Catholic ‘Ohana website, we’ve also launched our official Twitter page!  You’ve probably heard a lot about Twitter recently, but some of you might still be confused as to what it is.  Twitter is a free social networking service that allows its users to follow each other’s updates known as “tweets.”  Our goal is to use Twitter to deliver information taken from our weekly bulletin as well as our website to you.  Our “tweets” will also help us to be more “green.”

Follow us at http://twitter.com/1catholicohana.  Happy tweeting!
