ONE `OHANA — GENERATIONS OF FAITH
Thanks to all who registered for the One `Ohana —Generations of Faith Religious Education Program.
There are still some who do not understand that this IS our program for RE. It is especially important that families with school-age children register although the program is designed for people of all ages.
We are grateful for all who volunteered to help with the program. There are ways for everyone to offer their skills.
One `Ohana is "events oriented." Events focus on how the particular topic is lived out in our parish of North Kona Catholic Community. Each year, the parish will have a different theme for study, activities and service. Since October is Respect Life Month, the first event will feature prayer, discussion, and activities related to the inherent dignity of every living person because we were made in the image and likeness of God.
One `Ohana will take place on October 25th at St. Michael's. It will begin with a lunch which we will provide, followed by an introductory prayer and overview of the theme. Age-related activities will take up the largest segment of the time. There will be a short gathering and period of sharing followed by a Closing Prayer. Each family will receive a home kit to be worked on until the next event in December. People needing Registration Forms and/or brochures, please call the office. We have plenty of extras available. If you have questions, please contact Fr. Lio, Zola, or CynthiaPlease pray for our brothers and sisters in Samoa, Tonga, and the Philippines. Our second collection will be to support them as they work to begin their healing and rebuilding.
BLESSING OF THE TRI-ATHLETES
The athletes will be blessed in front of the Grotto on Friday. October 9th at 8:00 am. our own who has made it: St. Damien. pray for us.
SAINT DAMIEN DE VEUSTER OF MOLOKAI
At last the great day the Islands of Hawaii have yearned for is upon us! Sunday, October 11th, Pope Benedict XVI will canonize Fr. Damien a saint. What a joy it will be for us the next time we sing the Litany of saints to hear the name of one of our own... "St. Damien, Pray for Us." While not everyone is able to be in Rome for the canonization, the Church in the Diocese of Honolulu will have the opportunity to celebrate its joy as a relic of St. Damien will be presented for Veneration in the various Churches of the Diocese.
The Relic of St. Damien will be received by the North Kona Catholic Community on Sunday, Oct. 18th with a procession of a picture of St. Damien and the Relic at the beginning of the 7am Mass at St. Michael's. At the conclusion of the Mass there will be an opportunity for Veneration of the Relic.
The Relic will next be received at Immaculate Conception Church at 9am. Here the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be celebrated.
At 2pm in the afternoon the general public will be invited to join the Catholic Community in an Ecumenical Prayer Service at St. Michael's (tent). Refreshments will be served following the service.
At 6pm the Spanish Community will receive the Relic and after their Mass there will be Devotions celebrating St. Damien.
Each of the above celebrations will provide opportunity for the Veneration of the Relic of St. Damien. We do hope you will join in the celebrations praising God for one of our own who has made it: St. Damien, pray for us.
A COMMUNAL CELEBRATION OF THE SACRAMENT OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK ... will take place Sunday, Oct. 18th at 9am at Immaculate Conception Church in Holualoa. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
One of our great treasures is the way the Church has frequently flourished under unfavorable conditions, like the grape ivy on the mantel that refuses to die no matter how infrequently you water it or open the drapes. Like the apartheid laws in South Africa in the last century, the penal laws of Ireland were aimed at depriving the majority population of basic human rights. The Protestant parliament of Ireland enacted laws limiting the practice of Catholicism. The goal was to force conversion from "popery" to the Church of Ireland, and additional laws took aim at Jews, non-Anglicans, and Quakers.
There were laws against intermarriage, laws against Catholics being lawyers (there was a one-hundred-pound fine), a law granting lifelong income to priests who became Protestant, and a ban on weapons. In fact, until 1793, a Catholic man had to recruit and pay a Protestant man to serve in the local militia in his place! As if family life is not complicated enough in any age, the sons of a deceased father could divide his land equally, unless one became Protestant. In that case, all would go to him! When allowed, new Catholic churches had to be built of wood, not stone, be off a main road or city square, have no steeple or bell, and be called a "chapel." Catholic "Emancipation" was largely secured by 1829, but even up to the founding of the Irish State in the 1920s, some effects of the laws endured. No wonder that poor Irish immigrants to the United States frequently built gloriously beautiful churches as their first act on free soil!
LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY
God's design for all of creation is that it be harmonious and whole. Paradoxically, it's the rhythm of the paschal mystery —between dying and rising—that keeps us harmonious and whole. Dying to self means that our own selfish interests are not put ahead of the good of another—which promotes harmony. The new life that always comes from, self-giving is a sign of wholeness. Always what stands in the way of harmony and wholeness is hardness of heart—our own or another's. The challenge is in the example of Jesus: embrace and bless even the little ones.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
Every child in our parish has a right to participate fully in our faith community. However, there are children who may not manage well in regular classes for sacramental preparation. Working in small groups with catechists trained to work with children with special needs, these young members of our faith community can receive their First Communion and continue with their religious education. We are fortunate to have husband and wife catechists, Ben and Joanne Agdeppa, who attended a diocesan training on how to prepare children with autism for First Communion. From their personal experience, they will encourage you to give your child the opportunity to grow in their faith. Joanne has materials to share with moms who are struggling with this issue. For more information. you can reach Joanne at 987-6796.
