Two More Generous People Needed!

We need just two more compassionate people who are willing to donate one hour two times each month to take the Eucharist to the Hospital.  Including your transportation time, that equates to 24 hours per year.

There is a Hospital orientation scheduled in October.  To sign up for that, call “Priestly” at 322-9311 and he will tell you what to do.  Fr. Lio will train you about the pastoral aspect of being a Minister to the Hospital.  Either an experienced Hospital Minister or I will accompany you for your first visit or until you are comfortable.  If you are willing to participate in the Corporal Work of Mercy, please call me at 960-0734.  —Cynthia Taylor

St. Teresa of Jesus—October 15th

Let nothing disturb you; let nothing frighten you.  Gifted with a passionate spirit, young Teresa dreamed of converting Muslims and becoming a martyr.  All things are passing; God never changes.  But her mother’s death when Teresa was fourteen inspired lifelong devotion to Our Lady, and Teresa entered the Carmelites, Mary’s order, despite her father’s objections and her own fragile health.

Patience gains everything.  Initially, she enjoyed her lax convent’s sociability and “busyness,” but mystical prayer and John of the Cross’ collaboration inspired her to reform the Carmelites.  Whoever has God, lacks nothing.

When her ideals encountered resistance and brought suffering, she maintained her peace—and humor.  Discovered devouring leftovers, she told her mildly scandalized nuns, “When I fast, I fast!  When I eat, I eat!”  To nuns demanding less work and more prayer in the convent schedule, she retorted:  “What we really need around here are fewer starry eyes and more strong arms!”  God alone is enough!  The italicized sentences here are her “Breviary Bookmark,” the simple, profound prayer of Teresa, the first woman Doctor of the Church. — Peter Scagnelli, © Copyright, J.S. Focusing the Gospel—To the Point

What made this one leper different from the other nine?  He alone returned to Jesus to give thanks for being healed.  But the Gospel is telling us even more:  the leper’s return revealed a depth of faith that Jesus acknowledged as a sign of salvation.  Faith is discovering who Jesus is, salvation is the lifelong journey of returning to and encountering Him.  —Living Liturgy™ Spirituality, Celebration, and Catechesis for Sundays and Solemnities; Year C · 2010; Liturgical Press © 2009 by Order of Saint Benedict, Collegeville, Minnesota
