One ‘Ohana for 2010—2011
The One ‘Ohana will take place in the tent on Sunday, October 10th at 12noon. The date is two weeks later than previously scheduled.
The topic for all the sessions this year will be The Creed. Each Sunday, we all say The Creed together after the Homily. Often without thinking about the words, we profess our belief in all the basic tenets of the Catholic Faith. In our six One ‘Ohana sessions for the year, we will look at each one separately. Our first session will be I Believe in the Holy Catholic Church. What does that mean and how do you express that belief in your daily life? The Creed is much more than a prayer we recite. It is a prayer to be lived.
One ‘Ohana is Faith Formation or Religious Education for everyone. It is our way of teaching adults how to form our children in the Faith.
Registration for One ‘Ohana
Registration for Religious Education (One ‘Ohana) continues after each Mass outside the tent Sunday—Sept. 19th. Registration is also being done at the mauka Churches. If you prefer, you may fill out the form on the website and return it to the office. The link for the online registration is: http://onecatholicohana.org/one-ohana.html.
Catholic Charities Sunday 2010
Thank you for your generous donations during last weekend’s annual appeal for Catholic Charities Sunday. Your gifts will be used for helping people to help them-selves—a hand-up, not a hand-out. Mahalo!
Fr. Lio Goes to Rome
After 18 years as an ordained priest, Fr. Lio, having received a personal gift from friends, will visit Rome for the first time. He will leave Kona on October 10th and join Msgr. Fran Cilia in the Eternal City. Luckily Fr. Fran has been to Rome many, many times and can show Fr. Lio the Vatican, other sacred places and the ruins that attract pilgrims to Rome. Many in our congregation have been there and know the thrill of being in St. Peter’s Square when the Holy Father gives his blessing.
Since Fr. Lio travels alternately among the Masses at St. Michael’s and the mission Churches, this message will allow everyone an opportunity to say “Bon Voyage” and Godspeed. —The Pastoral Council

It might be your spouse, neighbor, or friend who just wants to know what the Catholic Church is all about. In the end, they may or may not choose to join. If you know someone like this, call the office and we can arrange to meet: 326-7771.

St. Pio of Pietrelcina—September 23rd
Did the World War II American flyer really see Padre Pio in midair, preventing the bombing of his village below? Did Pio actually “bilocate” in Italy, the Holy Land, even America, as countless witnesses testified? Or “read hearts” before penitents spoke? What of the stigmata, Christ’s wounds imprinted on Padre Pio’s hands, feet, and side?
John Paul II, who as a young man visited Pio, never mentioned these extraordinary elements at the canonization. Instead, the Pope spoke of “trials accepted with love,” referring perhaps to sanctions restricting Pio’s faculties for hearing confessions and celebrating public Mass, imposed because of criticism, later discredited, sent to the Vatican; of Pio’s offering his sufferings in union with Jesus’ passion for a suffering world; of his continual availability to sinners seeking direction and absolution; of Padre Pio’s prayer that blossomed in charity, especially through his “House for the Relief of Suffering,” a healthcare facility that anticipated by decades today’s holistic partnering of medical science and spirituality.
Finally, how comforting for us “ordinary” Christians, this extraordinary saint’s most frequent advice: “Pray, hope, and don’t worry!”
