Kona Marathon Closes Alii Drive Next Sunday

The annual Kona Marathon takes place next Sunday, June 27.  Access to the morning Masses will be from Hualalai Road.  Although the southbound lane of Alii Drive will be closed, athletes will be routed onto the makai shoulder of the road from Hualalai Road to the entrance of St. Michael’s property.  Anyone leaving the Church will only be allowed to turn right toward Hualalai Road to exit the property.  A police officer will be stationed at the intersection of Hualalai Road and Alii Drive to assist parishioners in getting to and from the Church.

Peter’s Pence Collection

Next week our diocese will take up the Peter’s Pence Collection, which provides the Holy Father with the assistance he needs to carry out his most important charitable works.  The proceeds benefit the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression, and disasters.  Through your generosity, with Pope Benedict we can cast the love of Christ upon the world.

Food Pantry Slips

Thank all of you for all of your food donations to the food pantry.  Your generosity makes a great difference in our Parish and community at large.  Slips will be available again July 11th.

Your Light Has Helped to Say NO MORE to Cancer

A special thank you to everyone who participated in RELAY FOR LIFE fund raiser last Sunday.  The donations that you provided will help in the aid of research and education for the American Cancer Society.  This year, Kona’s RELAY FOR LIFE is on June 28th at the Old Airport. These events are sponsored by the American Cancer Society. The funds that are raised help promote research and education.

Pre-Catechumenate

Do you have questions about the Catholic Church? Do you think you might be interested in exploring the possibility of becoming part of our community? No obligation exists in getting the answers to your questions. Call now. Inquiry will begin in July. Flexible time can be arranged for your convenience. This is not a class. It is just an informal question and answer time.  Call either Cynthia at 960-0734 or Susan in the Parish Office at 326-7771.

Faith and Family Bible

We still have copies of a new Bible to offer you.  It is written with families in mind.  This Bible was developed by the same people who have given us the One ‘Ohana. We will, therefore, use it in our One ‘Ohana sessions, so you have time to get your copy for the next session in September.

The retail cost of this Bible is $29.99.  We were able to purchase them at a discount.  They are now $20.00. If you would like one, please ask at the Gift Shop table.  She can take your name and number.  Selling these Bibles is not the desired outcome.  There is no profit in just selling them.  Our goal is to get these Bibles into the hands and the lives of our One ‘Ohana families.  Cynthia Taylor – 960-0734.

RCIA for Children

In September, Zola Ingram will begin inquiry for unbaptized children over the age of 7. If you have children who fall into this category, please leave your name and number in the Parish Office.

Bring a Friend to Adult Inquiry for RCIA

The first phase of RCIA is coming to inquire. People come to ask questions, get a feel for what it means to be a Catholic and to learn a little about the Catholic Faith. After that a person can decide whether or not they are even interested in going on to the next step.

The second step begins when the inquirer decides to embark on the journey of learning what it means to be a Catholic. This should occur in September.  Some who inquire have never been baptized in any Christian religion. Others seek to be Catholics but have already been baptized in another faith. Then again, there are always some who were baptized as Catholics but never practiced their faith. All are welcome to inquire.

If you have a spouse, neighbor, friend, etc. who is 18 or older and is interested in taking a closer look at the Catholic faith, please bring them to an inquiry session. Initial Inquiry sessions will be held at St. Michael’s in Kamiano Hall on both Saturday, July 10, 2010 at 10AM and Sunday, July 11, 2010 at 1PM. For anyone wishing to be baptized at the Easter Vigil the Inquiry period is a must.

Please call CynthiaTaylor at 960-0734 with questions.

Vacation Bible School

Registration Forms for the Baobab Blast Bible School are coming in steadily. There are still a few slots left for 1st to 6th graders. We would like to have five children in each group.  Forms are available in the parish office.

Some of the parents are available to help which is wonderful. We will still be happy for more volunteers…teens or adults. Teens who are interested are often very helpful in assisting younger children with games, crafts, putting skits together, and storytelling. We are looking for adults, too, (can be aunties or grandmas) to help with guiding groups with Bible stories or any of the activities named above. There will also be lunch and snacks to put together.

This is a perfect opportunity for intergenerational exchange. If you love children, this is the time for you to get involved. We’ll have a short meeting for volunteers in July.  Thank you in advance.  Cynthia M. Taylor 960-0734.

Saint John Fisher (1469-1535) and Saint Thomas More (1477-1535) - June 22

From Robert Bolt’s classic A Man For All Seasons to Showtime’s edgy The Tudors, Thomas More endears himself still: lawyer-statesman of impeccable integrity, remarried widower and affectionate father delighting in a lively household—four children, a pet monkey, even a paid jester! And challenges still: humanist-reformer, yet champion of Catholic faith and papal primacy.

John Paul II named him “Patron of Statesmen and Politicians,” citing More’s generous work, both as a lawyer and in government service, on behalf of the poorest and most marginalized people of his time, as well as his promotion of education for all sectors of society. More’s decision for principle over politics, conscience over convenience prompted his final words: “I die the King’s good servant, but God’s first.” Alone among England’s bishops, John Fisher dared challenge Henry VIII’s divorce and repudiation of the papacy. When the Pope named the imprisoned Fisher a cardinal, Henry thundered: “Don’t bother sending Fisher’s red hat here; I’ll send Fisher’s head to Rome!” Whose “good servants” are we first? Isn’t a right conscience worth the pain of standing alone?  —Peter Scagnelli, © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

Prayer & Serendipity Bible Studies

The Prayer group will continue to meet at St. John’s on Thursday evenings from 7pm to 8:30pm.  We will be using the NAB Catholic Serendipity Bible Studies…  The Theme for this current Bible Study is “Women of Excellence—Being a Godly Woman.”

The Bible Study will run for 6 weeks, which began June 10th and will continue thru July 15th, 2010.  Then a new session will begin.  This past Thursday, June 10th the studies centered on Seeking God’s Truth, from 1 Kings 10:1-13.  This coming Thursday we will be doing Using My Gifts from Acts 18:1-4 & 18-20.  Please join us.

We begin the evening with intercessory prayer and song of praise then the scriptures/bible study and end in prayer.  So we usually are done by 8:30pm.  Some of us linger for a little while longer drinking coffee and talking story.  If you have any questions, please call Margie at 323-3469 or 217-6054.

Nothing is far from God. -- St. Monica

Reflecting on the Gospel

Anyone involved with you (parents, youth ministers, teachers, counselors) knows that the question of identity is paramount for them.  They are trying to find out who they are in terms of talents, potential career choices, how they relate to others.  All this is a positive step in their maturing process, during which they identify their strengths and weaknesses, consider their assets, and bond with others who help them in this sometimes painful process.  When asked about who they are, virtually no one would answer in terms of disciples about his identity.  They reply with good answers that they have heard from others, part of the Jewish psyche of the time about the Messiah.

Jesus asks again a pretty simple question about His identity.  Now Peter answers, but a surprise lies in how Jesus clarifies the meaning of “the Christ.”  He is to “suffer greatly,” “be rejected,” “be killed.”  This is the way Jesus becomes who He really is—the risen One.  To realize our own truest identity, we must daily die to ourselves.  This is the way we become who we truly are to be followers of Jesus who daily die to ourselves and daily share more and more in the life of the risen Lord.

Jesus is so much in touch with His ultimate mission— to “suffer greatly,” “be rejected,” “be killed”, and “be raised”— that He actually defines His identity in terms of it.  His mission is an extension of who Jesus is— Savior.  We usually think of Jesus’ mission as teaching and preaching, healing and working miracles, and so it was.  But underlying these activities is the ultimate one— His suffering, death and resurrection, so it is with us.

Through baptism we share in Jesus’ identity and mission—we are plunged into the waters of baptism, dying to self and rising to new life in Christ and thus are made members of the Body of Christ.  Our own identity and mission is that of Jesus: to die to self so that we are raised to new life.  Following Jesus has its cost.  The statement in the gospel is true: we save our lives by losing them.  We know this is true because Jesus showed us the way. - Living Liturgy TM, Spirituality, Celebration, Catechesis, © 2010.
