Vacation Bible School

To date, there are about 17 children whose parents are in the process of registering them for Vacation Bible School. We still have space for about 10 more children in any grade from 1-6. We will have a bible group for 7th and 8th graders who have asked to help. After the bible discussion, they will help the younger children with games, crafts, music and storytelling. The dates are July 19-23 from 9:30am-3pm. Snacks and lunch will be provided. If you have already filled out a form, please mail or drop it off in the Parish Office so we can order the right number of books.  Registration forms are also available in the Parish Office: 326-7771.

Catholic Faith and Family Bible

We still have copies of a new Bible to offer you.  It is written with families in mind.  This Bible was developed by the same people who have given us the One ‘Ohana. We will, therefore, use it in our One ‘Ohana sessions, so you have time to get your copy for the next session in September.  The retail cost of this Bible is $29.99.  We were able to purchase them at a discount.  They are now $20.00. If you would like one, please ask Carolyn at the Gift Shop table.  She can take your name and number.  Selling these Bibles is not the desired outcome.  There is no profit in just selling them.  Our goal is to get these Bibles into the hands and the lives of our One ‘Ohana families. Cynthia Taylor – 960-0734

RCIA for Children

In September, Zola Ingram will begin inquiry for unbaptized children over the age of 7. If you have children who fall into this category, please leave your name and number with the Parish Office.

Adult RCIA

Those who were baptized at the Easter Vigil this year have now completed their process of initiation. It is time once again to begin working with a new group of inquirers.

The first phase is just that. People come to inquire…to ask questions, to learn a little about the Catholic Faith so they can

decide whether or not they are even interested in going on to the next step. It is a time we talk and decide mutually whether taking the next step is right for the inquirer.

The second step begins when the inquirer decides to embark on the journey of learning what it means to be a Catholic.  Some who inquire have never been baptized in any Christian religion. Others seek to be Catholics but have already been baptized in another faith. Then again, there are always some who were baptized as Catholics but never practiced their faith. The programs to become full participants in the Catholic Church differ, depending on the inquirer’s understanding.  If you have a spouse, neighbor, friend, etc. who is interested in taking a closer look at the Catholic faith, please contact me. We will do Inquiry (or the Pre-Catechumenate) at your convenience during July and August. Please call (Cynthia M. Taylor 960-0734) or leave your name in the Parish Office and I will return your call.

Parish Calendar Planned, To Be Issued Free to All Registered Parishioners

The Heritage Committee of the North Kona Catholic Community is producing a customized parish calendar for the upcoming year.

The liturgical calendar will cover November 2010 through December 2011, and be issued at the end of October to all registered parish families. The free calendar will post the One ‘Ohana schedule, with dates for parish celebrations, educational opportunities, feast days and religious observances, such as the Triduum.  It will also have handy Church contact information at a glance, plus attractive historical parish photos.

The calendar will be issued to all registered parish families.  If you aren’t yet registered as a parish member you can do so at the parish office during operating hours 9:30am—2:30pm (Mon) and 8:30am—2:30pm (Tues through Fri).  To receive a registration form by mail, call 326-7771; forms can also be downloaded at http://onecatholicohana.org/registration-of-parishioners.html.

Upcoming Infant Baptism Session

The next Baptism Session will be held Sunday, June 20th at St. Michael’s. Please call the parish office to request that a Baptism form be sent to you.  Parents and their children must attend the 11am Mass that morning, but we ask that you please arrive no later than 10:45am in order to sit at the front. A presentation of the parents and the children to be baptized will be done by the priest, and then he will anoint the children with the Oil of Catechumens.  If you are late to the Mass and you miss this part of the Baptism ceremony, you will not able to have your child baptized the following weekend.

Immediately following the Mass, parents and godparents must attend the Baptism Class, which will be held at 12:15pm in Kamiano Hall. If the godparents are from another parish, they must attend a Baptism Class in their home parish and their priest must send a letter to our office confirming that they attended the class.  Please note that at least one godparent must be a practicing Catholic. If the other godparent is not Catholic, he or she must be a Christian witness (please take special note of the sheet included in the Baptism information packet, “Choosing Godparents”).  If you should have any questions, please call Susan.

Focusing the Gospel

Jesus’ command is clear:  we are to feed others.  We give to others not from the “deserted place” of our own hearts but from the “leftover fragments” of God’s blessings (see first reading).  God’s abundant nourishment is most startlingly given in the handing over of Jesus’ life (see second reading) on the cross, in the bread and wine, and in our own self-gift to others.
