Parish Calendar Planned, To Be Issued Free to All Registered Parishioners

The Heritage Committee of the North Kona Catholic Community is producing a customized parish calendar for the upcoming year.

The liturgical calendar will cover November 2010 through December 2011, and be issued at the end of October to all registered parish families. The free calendar will post the One ‘Ohana schedule, with dates for parish celebrations, educational opportunities, feast days and religious observances, such as the Triduum.  It will also have handy Church contact information at a glance, plus attractive historical parish photos.

The calendar will be issued to all registered parish families.  If you aren’t yet registered as a parish member you can do so at the parish office during operating hours 9:30am—2:30pm (Mon) and 8:30am—2:30pm (Tues through Fri).  To receive a registration form by mail, call 326-7771; forms can also be downloaded at http://onecatholicohana.org/registration-of-parishioners.html.

Cemetery Grounds Clean-up

On Saturday, May 22nd, we need volunteers to come forward to help us clean-up our cemeteries in time for the Memorial Day holiday.  Bring your rakes, garden tools, gloves, and hats.  Water and food will be provided. Be at one of the cemeteries at 8am to assist:

  • St. Michael’s Cemetery—Pocho
  • Holualoa Catholic Cemetery (1-mile north of Immaculate Conception Church)—Fr. Lio
  • St. Paul’s Cemetery—Fr. John

Vacation Bible School

We are seriously thinking about having Vacation Bible School this summer for children in Grades 1—7.  Vacation Bible School would be a five-day program.  Each day would be about a different topic.  We know that some of the children attend at other churches and we will be anxious to find out how much interest there would be at having classes at St. Michael’s.  Before we plan, we need to find out if there is any interest at all. —Zola & Cynthia

Food Pantry Weekend

Thank you to all who remembered to bring in their food donations this weekend.  There are so many people and families in our community who are truly hurting financially, and worry over whether they can feed themselves or their children.  Your generosity helps to alleviate some of their anxiety, and for that they are so grateful.  Mahalo and God bless you!

Catholic Communication Campaign

Help Us Connect the World With God’s Word! Today we will hold the Collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign. This collection funds media projects that spread the Good News through the internet, radio, TV and print media.  These projects evangelize, nourish the faithful, foster community and grant easy, direct access to thousands of Catholic resources.  Help connect the world with God’s Word!  Support the Catholic Communication Campaign in today’s collection.

Spanish for English Speakers

Whether for professional, business, or social reasons, it has become increasingly more important to learn to speak Spanish.  Mr. Martín Sanchez, one of our parishioners, teaches Spanish at Kealakehe High School.  Mr. Sanchez has offered to teach Spanish lessons for us at St. Michael’s.  The classes would be twice a week—Mondays and Thursdays from 4:00-5:00pm (slight time change) at Immaculate Conception Hall. The cost has been changed to $60 per month, paid directly to Mr. Sanchez.  If you are interested, please call the office.

St. Rita of Cascia—May 22nd

If you’re ever in Philadelphia on May 22nd, forget parking anywhere near St. Rita’s shrine.  Cars line streets and fill medians as throngs pack a candlelight vigil and six Masses, honoring this patroness of lost causes, hopeless situations, and—as her statue in countless churches built by 20th Century immigrants testifies—difficult marriages, troubled homes, and alienated children.

Wise people warn, be careful what you pray for.  “Divine Savior,” Rita prayed, “let me suffer like you!”  Obedient to parents who refused her wish to become a num, Rita married a man who returned her devotion with twenty years of abuse.  When enemies murdered him, Rita’s two sons swore revenge.  Paintings depict her pointing the angry boys toward Christ crucified, whom she begged to restrain them.  Within the year, both sons died.  Alone now, Rita went to the convent but was refused.  The nuns feared violence, since one of them was related to the murderer.  Rita arranged peace between the families, made vows, and became much sought after as a counselor and intercessor for forty years on earth—and ever since in heaven. —Peter Scagnelli, © Copyright, J.S. Living the Paschal Mystery

We are all familiar with the Catholic doctrine that the Holy Scriptures are the inspired Word of God.  Through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, each of us is an inspired word of God when we are faithful to Jesus.  This means, as the Gospel suggests, that we are to preach and live as Jesus commanded.  Repentance and forgiveness require that we first are willing to do as Jesus did—give ourselves over to the Spirit of God who heals and gives life.  Having first experienced God’s saving action, we can be that saving action for others. —Living Liturgy™ 2010, © 2009 by Order of St. Benedict, Collegeville, Minnesota.  All rights reserved.

About Liturgy—Silences During Mass

Several times during Mass it is appropriate to pause in silence.  These silent times enable us to surrender ourselves to God’s presence, to remember that the Spirit dwells within us and enables us to reverse the “absence” of the ascension:  through the power of the Spirit within us the Risen Christ is present.

First, both the Rite of Blessing and sprinkling holy water, and the Penitential Rite call for a brief period of silence and reflection.  This time allows us to make the transition from our busy lives into God’s presence, consciously surrender ourselves to God’s action within us, and call to mind anything we have done that keeps us from giving ourselves over to taking up Jesus’ saving mission.  Although this time is brief (and in some cases so brief as to be non-existent!) it is mightily important; this opens the door for our participation in the rest of the Mass.  We take much time to prepare for important events in our lives; surely this brief time is no less important!

Second, after Communion there may be a brief period of silence.  Since we have just shared in eating and drinking the Body and Blood of Christ, this is time afforded us to appreciate more fully what we have shared and think about how we might be a better presence of the Body and Blood of Christ to others in our daily living.  We might consider one specified way during the coming week when we will consciously be the presence of the Risen Christ for someone else.
