Special Talk This Week

Fr. Louis Camelli, a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago, will speak on the topic:  “The Catholic Difference: Catholic Identity and a Special Reflection on the Blessed Virgin Mary in Catholic Life.” The talk will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 12th in Kamiano Hall at 10am. Fr. Camelli is the Cardinal’s Delegate for Christian Formation and Mission in the Archdiocese of Chicago.  All are welcome.

Parish Mission / One ‘Ohana

“...that the light of Scripture might fill the human heart.”  (Dei Verbum 26)

This year’s Parish Mission will be held at Immaculate Conception Hall –Holualoa from Monday, Jan. 25th to Thursday, Jan. 28th, at 7pm each evening.

The topic for this year’s Mission is Dei Verbum (The Word of God). Many of you have asked for more information and discussion of the Sacred Scriptures or the Bible.  The presenter this year will be Fr. William Burton, OFM of Chicago. Fr. Burton just recently returned from one of many of his trips to the Holy Land.

Dei Verbum is the official title of the Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation solemnly promulgated by Pope Paul VI in November, 1965.

The following is a quote from a pastor where Fr. Burton has worked with the congregation:  Fr. Burton’s vast knowledge of the Bible … makes Bible study rewarding, intriguing, interesting, and just plain fun.  Parishioners are always asking:  “When is Fr. Burton coming back?”

Please Note! Attendance at the Parish Mission will count as the One ‘Ohana gathering.  The Feb. 7th gathering has been cancelled. Call if you have questions about the Mission or One ‘Ohana. Remember it will be held at Immaculate Conception Hall.  See you at the mission!

Next Infant Baptism Session

The next session will be done this month since no Baptisms are allowed during the season of Lent which begins in February.

Baptism Session:  (Mass, then Class)

  • Sunday, Jan. 24th – 10:45am: arrive for the 11am Mass at St. Michael’s; please sit in the front row
  • Sunday, Jan. 24th – 12:15pm: attend Baptism class in Kamiano Hall (approx. one-hour long)
  • Sat/Sun, Jan. 30th or 31st: Baptism weekend

If you’d like for your child to be baptized this month, please call the office to request that a Baptism form be sent to you.  The Baptism form and a copy of your child’s Birth Certificate must arrive in the office no later than Thursday, Jan. 21st.

If the godparents are not parishioners here, they must attend a Baptism Class at their home parish, with a letter from their parish priest stating they attended the class, and submitted to the office along with the Baptism form and baby’s Birth Certificate.  If you have any questions, please call Susan at the office.

Baptized Into Service

It has been suggested the most important part of our Eucharist is the dismissal:  Go forth to love and serve the Lord.  Without that, what benefit we derive from the celebration remains among ourselves.  And that’s contrary to the Church’s mission to go out to the ends of the earth and make disciples of all.

Our baptism claims us for the mission, just as Jesus was claimed by the voice from heaven as the beloved Son.  The words of Isaiah outline the message of God’s chosen one:  a proclamation of justice to the nations.  As we go forth in loving service, we carry the mandate of justice for the sake of all God’s beloved children.  —The Baptism of the Lord, Year C.  Illustration © 1997 T. Priests’ Appreciation Luncheon – January 24

The Pastoral Council invites all parishioners to celebrate the “Year for Priests” at a Priests’ Appreciation Luncheon on Sunday, Jan. 24th from 1:00-4:00pm at the Old Airport Pavilion. We will be honoring Bishop Larry Silva, Fr. Lio, Fr. John Fredy, and Fr. Jack.

Entertainment is being provided by the diverse ethnic communities that comprise our One Catholic ‘Ohana. You are encouraged to bring a dish to share to supplement the food and beverages that will be provided.  Please label your serving utensils with your name.

Don’t miss this opportunity to thank our Bishop and our priests for all they do to help us on our earthly journey. -  Shirley David, Pastoral Council

2nd-Year Confirmation Class News

The 2nd-Year Confirmation Class is asking for the support of our parish with its latest community service project benefiting “The Friendly Place.”  To start, we will be asking the following committees/ministries to help us provide the following items:

  • Social Ministry – laundry baskets
  • Seniors (Young-at-Heart) - bar soap
  • Liturgy Committee – shampoo / conditioner
  • Pastoral Council – laundry detergent
  • Finance Council – rubber slippers (all sizes)

Other items we would like to place in the baskets are bath towels, toilet paper, paper towels, toothpaste, toothbrushes, disposable razors, and shaving crème.

If you would like to contribute any of the above items or make a monetary donation, collection bins will be available for drop-offs after Sunday Masses on Jan. 17th and 24th.

In addition, we will hold a Car Wash on Sunday, Jan. 24th from 12noon to 4pm. All funds raised go toward purchasing items to fill “The Friendly Place” baskets.  Call Robert Matsumoto (938-5094) / Scott Unger (960-5324) with any questions.  Thank you for your support!

Ministry Schedules for February

I would like to get the next Ministry Schedules for Feb. (and March for Hospital Ministers) done earlier this month.  Please call the parish office to let me know if you will be away in February or March – no later than Jan. 19th. If you do not call me by then, you must find your own replacement if your name was put on a weekend when you will be gone.  I appreciate your cooperation! —Susan

Food Pantry Slips to be Distributed

This weekend at all the Masses, Food Pantry slips will be made available.  Please take a food slip from the basket and bring the food item listed on it with you to Mass next weekend.  This monthly plea to parishioners (and visitors) to help bring in food for our hungry brothers and sisters has been a godsend to many individuals and families in the Kona area.  God bless you for your kind generosity!

Best Kept Secret

St. Michael’s Parish has a Bereavement Ministry.  At any time but certainly at this time of year when families gather to give thanks and to anticipate then praise the arrival of Our Lord Jesus Christ, it may bring sadness in the remembrance of loved ones who have departed our mortal world.  I’ve answered the call to be your bereavement minister and continue to be available to meet and listen with anyone wishing to seek solace.  I am consistently supported by those with whom I’ve ministered in their appreciation of our time spent and how it helps in my own understanding of loss in the greater scheme of God’s plan for us.  If you are one who is suffering over the loss of someone dear, please do yourself the favor of contacting me for an appointment.  The only downside is that you spent less than an hour in exploring your feelings with someone who is in the same place.  I’m available for you most any day.  Steve Lopez: 938-8949

St. Hilary – January 13th

Born in Poitiers, France, whose populace would later elect him bishop, Hilary, married and a father, was converted from paganism to Christianity through his reading of Scripture.  The focus of his prayerful study was the Prologue to the Gospel according to John, which portrays Jesus as the divine Logos, eternally begotten of the Father.  As a result, Hilary became in the words of the biblical scholar Jerome, “the Latin Trumpet against the Arians,” heretics who believed Jesus to be merely human, not divine.  In defense of Christ’s divinity, Hilary was not only eloquent in debate but utterly fearless in the face of relentless persecution and even exile.

Thus by the witness of his own discipleship, Hilary taught that faith in Jesus as the divine Son of God has consequences.  Reflecting on Jesus’ challenge to His disciples, “You are the salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13 ), Hilary notes that, as salt both preserves from corruption and adds savor to food, so must the faithful disciple bear a witness that, by word and example, leads others to immortality and virtuous living.                —Peter Scagnelli, © Copyright, J.S.
